Earthquake killing 3,500 in Indonesia

Posted by Khushal Khan on May 28th, 2006

A 6.2 magnitude of earthquake according to richter scale kills more than 3,500 {so far} in the devastating Earthquake in Indonesia. It is considered to be the nation’s worst disaster since tsunami in 2004.
More over the esarthquake’s epicentre was near a Mount Merapi Volacno which has been smoking hot gases from the past few days, i hope it doesn’t errupts. The interesting part is that one of the oldest and greatest Buddhist temple near to the Earthquake affected area is left un harmed by the Earthquake.
May Allah Help our fellow Muslims in this critical time as the death tolls are rising and an emergency situation has been declared, we hope our government provides sufficient support to our fellow Muslims in this tough time.

Children in our society

Posted by Shoaib Anwer on May 26th, 2006

In general, successive governments in Pakistan have shown little concern on issues such as child rights or human rights violations. It is therefore important to call their attention to this worst form of child rights violations being perpetrated against children in the tribal areas today.

Children as young as three years old have been convicted by name and sent to prison for crimes allegedly committed by their fathers and other extended family members. According to the official statistics, there are 49 juvenile prisoners mostly imprisoned under the collective responsibility clause of the notorious Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) 1901. This is excluding those who have crossed 18 years of age behind bars in different jails of the North West Frontier Province. Unfortunately, there are at least 15 children, girls and boys, who are less than 10 years of age wasting away their precious lives behind bars. They are being denied the right to a free, healthy and normal life as promised by the Country’s Constitution as well as by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Imprisoning infants and children is a total violation of all humane norms and is a blemish in the conscience of the government and the people. These violations of rights of the children and the meaningful silence of the people at the helm of affairs depicts the apathy of the government towards the tribal areas and demonstrates that as a nation we have become immune to meaningless deaths and gross violation of human rights.

Statistics shows that more than 42 million people in Pakistan are earning Rs. 1,800 a month. It is impossible to survive in such a meager amount and it is the children who suffer the most in such circumstances. More than 600,000 children, under the age of five years, die in this country; and more than 23 million children never see the inside of a school.

I think there is a vital need for overall awareness on issues including that of children. A particular, influential and elitist segment of the society is exploiting the rest of the population. Similarly it is shameful and deplorable the way children’s lives are being endangered in under developing countries and elsewhere in the world. We will have to make concerted efforts in every field to protect and safeguard the future of our children and make the world a safe and peaceful place to live.

P.S: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.

LAN Gaming!

Posted by Khushal Khan on May 15th, 2006

I saw my friends in GIKI play Counter-Strike and MOHA, the first sight caought my eyes and i was like in a urge to play the games. Later on i found out they are multi player LAN games which ones can play with friends whose systems are connected via a cable to your PC. They are quite different from normal games with missions as in this game the only mission is to eliminate the entire opponents team, and consisted of all real players.

The fun of this game grabbed my attention when i visited my mate for the second time last month and so bought that game CD from him. Luckily, the hostel i live in has some 7 computers all connected to a mini network via HUB, i installed the game and Hurrah!!! we have a sitght worth watching, my friend shoots me he shouts Hurrah!!! ,When i shoot him i do the same in return, infact the whole enviornment has changed but its causing a disturbance in studies so we have created a fix time table for it. Counter Strike on LAN is fun, do give it a try, and then you can always play with computer bots as well if none of your buddies are free.
You can learn about the game on counter-strike.net.

Drenched…

Posted by Hissam Amir on May 14th, 2006

As I was reading the news paper some days ago, I read about a very shocking news. The news paper stated that there was no possibility of rain for the next 2 months!!! The moment I read this I just went blank. And I imagined what could be our future like with out this virtue provided to us by All Mighty ALLAH. Later when I reached home, I was very tired from the busy classes and the hot sun so I went to the wash room and began to wash my face and as I opened the tap and splashed the fresh water on my face I came back to life and was fresh again. But then again my mind began to think that I am faciliated with washing my face with fresh water just imagine how are those people living who are completely cut off from such facilities? One day we too are going to face such a situation and that is not far away, because in major cities like Lahore & Rawalpindi already there is a major problem regarding water and its scarcity. As the winters have finished we find the same sun that we used to praise for its warmth in winters now cursed because of its heat in summer. This time the summer has been very harsh so far. To think of it these are the days of spring, but one can find a very hot burning sun. Our planet is changing slowly and this all because of we all using up our resources lavishly. Every second person I know owns a car and these cars emit CO3 (Carbon Monoxide) which is very harmful for the ozone layer. Now this Ozone layer is very friendly to us in many ways. It is because of this Ozone layer that we can enjoy the pleasant sun shine, the cool breeze and to go on there is no stopping, but these harmful gas emitted by the cars and bikes destroy our ozone layer which in turns gets weak and in the end perishes ultimately leaving us to be cooked up by the sun. What this Ozone layer does is that, it blocks the harmful rays of the sun, but if there is no Ozone layer then there is no protection and this could lead to serious health & environmental problems like skin cancer and a very dry hot environment which in turn gives rise to dust which makes the situation more worst. I feel there is a big need to overcome such a problem as it is not just the problem of rich or poor but it is about humanity and its survival.

One solution I believe to this problem is to plant as many as trees as possible. But in this busy society now a day we can hardly find any one concerned about such things. We our selves are slowly destroying our lives and the most tragic part is we don’t even bother to realize about it. Come friends join hands and think on it as we are the future of the up coming society it is up to us to do some thing at least there is no harm in trying out good deeds…

Cell-Phone Viruses

Posted by Shoaib Anwer on May 13th, 2006

Telecom Wireless devices catch bad code through the air and then infect supposedly secure computer systems. ValleZ has released a digital epidemic. valleZ is the online handle of a 24 years old computer programmer from Spain, who last June, wrote the first malicious program targeting cellular phones, the Cabir Worm. Now security experts fear that the rush to integrate cell phones into every aspect of our daily lives might make them the perfect carriers for digital diseases. Cabir spreads like an airborne disease through Bluetooth wireless connections, a popular means of transferring data at close proximity between cell phones and everything from other phones to car GPS navigation systems. The cell-phones worm’s task could be as simple as swiping your address book or spewing out costly and annoying text-message spam. Or it could mount a “denial of service” attack on your wireless-service provider by making your phone rapidly dial many numbers in succession. As people start using their “smart” cell phones to tap into computer networks, the damage caused the malware could grow more severe. If, as promised, cell phones soon begin to serve as payment devices, mobile malware that nabs your identity and taps directly into your credit line could follow. Theoretically, a corporate accountant’s phones could pick up a worm and, when synched to a PC, let it loose on the company’s network, jumbling accounts.
There are plenty of other ways of infection as well, most of them come from local Blue-tooth devices which locates the target phone itselfs, the user on the other hand, expecting a good message or file from his friend is fooled and allows the file transfer which wipes out the entire data from the cell phone, causing alot of personal damage.S Some of the mobile phones come with there own Antivirus which effectively cleans them all and keep them shielded but most of the others dont come with any similar package. Most of my friend’s cell phones are infected and they are trying there best to get them cleaned but in vein, lets see if we can find any solution.

P.S:Me and Khushal both are not infected with the cellphone virus, You know why??? We both have the same Nokia 2600:D. It works best for us!

2nd Semester

Posted by Khushal Khan on May 3rd, 2006

I got the Semester Transcript today, i passed well one can say but the result was a bit bad from what i had expected it to be,anyways in University level i have come to know that getting a good GPA is just not the main purpose, the main thing is to learn and by the grace of god i have learned alot in the first semester.
The second semester has started with a bang in a sense that the number of subjects are six as compared to the five subjects we appeared in the first semester,i am really not happy over the teachers i got this time,i was lucky to have good teachers in the first semester but the situation is worst this time, the subjects are difficult as well and the teachers are strict too. This time i need to work real hard to stay in the university.

The overall class result for the first semester was worst too, to everyone’s surprise there were 17/44 Drop outs, and 2 others are on probation, our Institute is very famous for “Kicking Out” students who dont study, so i have to stay here and for that i have to study and study hard!!! Wish me best of luck for my future.
