Italy my favourites have advanced to the next level of worldcup soccer 2006 by defeating a tough team of Czech Republic in the last pool match.Italy scored 2 goals with one from Materazzi in the 23rd minute and a second goal by Inzaghi in the 87th minute of the match.I missed the match because of no ESPN availbility in my new home yet but anyways i got the news,in the other match Ghana beats USA to become one of the first African nations in the 2006 Worldcup soccer to advance to the other round.
Brazil Vs Croatia :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 14th, 2006
Brazil beat Croatia 1-0 in there opening match.
Full time Brazil comes away with a 1-0 win thanks to a great goal by Kaka in the 44th minute. Croatia played the defending champions even but Brazil earns the three points and is now tied with Australia atop the Group F table. Thanks for joining us for the game. We’ll be liveblogging from now until we go to the grave.90:00 Tudor shown a yellow card for Croatia. Not much added time. This one looks like it is going to Brazil.
87:58 Krancjar with a header over the net. Croatia trying to come up with one last miracle. Brazil rolling it around and watching the seconds tick.
86:36 Ronaldinho seemed to enjoy that steaking action. Flares are being lit in the Croatia sections. Maybe Croatia should be allowed to play with 12 men. That streaker had some good speed.
85:09 Streaker on the pitch. He gets down and kisses Prso’s shoe. Well played streaker but you are spending the night in a German jail. That might have been the highlight of the game. he was fully clothed and painted face with croatia colors.
83:45 Great shot of the Croatia fans dancing and singing in the stands. Will they be able to will their team a goal late in this one?
82:03 Cafu still has wheels on the right side and earns a corner. It is flicked away without harm. A lot of people in Australia rooting for a Croatia goal right about now.
80:11 Brazil’s performance kind of reminding me of England’s. Enough to get a result but not especially impressive. The tournament is still early but hopefully the good teams will play like they are capable.
78:56 Robinho falls down lack a sack of potatoes. Jerko Leko is a bit of a hack.
77:45 Brazil looking happy with a 1-0 result. Croatia lacking desperation. Bob desperate for another beer.
75:56 Crowd in the stadium sounds restless. I can relate. This game hasn;t been that great but an exciting final 15 could change all that.
74:43 Every time Croatia is close to the Brazil goal I say “There it is” and it just hasn’t happened yet.
73:29 Adriano is indeed playing. Just not well.
72:20 Croatia with 20 minutes to get the equalizer. I’m out of beer so the game better pick up or I will be one unhappy Bob. Until the postgame parties kick off in Berlin. It is going to be happening here tonight. You guys and gals should stop on by.
71;04 Public service announcement: we’re liveblogging every game in this stinkin’ competition so please join us each and every day. You will be rewarded in the afterlife. That is a money back offer.
69:47 Babic with a direct shot on goal but right at Dida. Croatia needs to think about aiming for the corners. Good opportunities abound but they still trail by a goal.
68:53 Robinho comes in for Ronaldo who takes his beer keg belly to the bench. After a month in Germany I will look the same way.
67:12 Croatia with another close in opportunity but it is kicked away by Juan. The Croatia attack is getting about 97% of the job done but needs to find a way to finish.
65:47 Thanks to all of you who are tuning in from work. Let’s bring the world’s economy down one football match at a time!
64:24 Croatia with the corner and it is hopelessly off the mark. Did you know that FIFA made Croatia add more white to their uniform before the start of the tournament? Silly, but true.
63:09 Is Adriano even playing in this one? He has been a non factor. Ronaldo also hasn’t down much. Brazil’s chances coming from their pace on the wings.
61:45 Cafu sets up Ronaldinho who’s header is stopped by the Croatian keeper. Just like that Brazil is on the attack. Ronaldinho crosses himself and shows the need for dental work.
60:45 Brazil rolling it around like it is a practice session. Croatia walking around like it is a practice session. This game has lost pace fast. It is a good thing. I think my fingers are starting to bleed.
59:02 How would you rate the performance of Brazil up to now? I’d say B-. Probably would give Croatia about the same grade. Neither team really making it happen.
57:47 Klasnic off and Olic on for Croatia. Kaka dragged down outside the area and Brazil awarded a free kick. Jerko Leko the one who made the tackle. Jerko Leko. Can’t get enough of that. Ronaldinho takes the kick and it is headed just off.
55:43 Brazil lulls the Croatian defense asleep and Ronaldo crushes one over the bar. Just when you are ready to fall asleep they attacl.
54:14 Brazil looking to be asleep in the start of the second half. They seem content to roll it around and watch the clock tick off.
53:01 Klasnic with a pickle of a shot that Dida eats up on the ground. Croatia wisely firing away and trying to get it back.
51:17 That was a great save from the Brazil keeper. Prso really hit that one square but it is still Brazil up by a goal. Drinking a nice pilsner this half for those scoring at home.
50:21 Prso with a strong shot that tests Dida to the fullest. Wow that was close.
48:23 Brail hasn’t looked unstoppable in this match but they have been effective. Always kind of interesting to see how teams start a tournament. Whether they peak early or work their way into form.
46:23 For those wondering, and I know there are a lot of you out there, Bob is indeed my name. In Russian it translats to “green bean.” Not sure what it means in Croatian but given the crap I have gotten for not liking their kits it probably means “dead man”
45:01 The second half is underway. Can Croatia come back against the tournament favorites or will Brazil samba its way to three points? Gosh it is hard to type with that picture below hanging around.
Halftime Not the greatest half but an evenly played one. Brazil strikes in the final minute with a great goal from Kaka. I’m off the get more beer and to soak my fingers in ice. I’ll be back right before the start of the second half. Go ahead and leave your thoughts about the first half. Your comments are great.
45:00 Croatia played them even but a late first half goal gives Brazil a huge lift heading into the dressing room. With a blink of an eye Kaka hammered that shot. Can’t turn your back on Brazil for a second.
43:25 GOALLLLL. Kaka with a blast. Where did that comes from? He takes two dribbles and smacks it from outside the box with his left foot. Great shot.
42:02 Emerson booked for a bad foul in the midfield. Nothing more to say about it.
41:124 Ronaldinho playing hacky sack in the box. Anyone notice he isn’t smiling much today?
39:27 Cafu with a shot on goal and it is handled by the Croatia keeper. Read today that Cafu is in trouble with the law for getting an Italian passport illegally. Kovac out for Croatia and Jerko Leko comes in. One of my favorite names in the World Cup. Say it with me: Jerko Leko.
38:02 Croatia with a free kick from the left side of the field outside the area and it is almost redirected in by Tudor and/or Kovac.
36:57 Emerson with a shot that sails high over the bar. Emerson looks like my third grade physical education teacher. None of that matters to you, but if he is reading this blog I’d like to say hi to Mr. Benz.
35:02 Niko Kovac down again for Croatia. He has something wrong with his midsection. Don’t we all. He gets up gingerly. Looks like a rib but I am not a doctor. I only play one on the Internet.
34:00 Neither team controlling the match. Croatia has held its own thus far and Brazil does not appear to be on top form. This one is going to be interesting.
32:56 Yellow card for Niko Kovac tripping Kaka. Kind of a weak yellow if you ask me. Ronaldinho over the ball just outside the Croatia area. Drilled into the wall.
31:57 Your Berlin weather forecast: It is about 90 F/30 C give or take a few. I’m sweating my balls off. Apologies for my language.
30:23 Adriano drags down a Croatia player, kind of. Wouldn’t have noticed Adriano was even playing out there until that one. Kovac down on the ground. We might need to amputate something. He’ll live.
27:46 Klasnic and Prso causing problems for Brazil on the left side. If I were Croatia’s coach I would tell them to keep it up. I’d also be a much better dressed man. He is looking swell on the sideline.
26:56 Klasnic (the Croatian player, not the pickle) fires it over the crossbar. Corner kick to Croatia an it is cleared away.
25:16 Neither team looking especially sharpe but it is still early. The expectations for Brazil to play a beautiful game are always great.
24:16 Ronaldinho even sweats in a cool way. Man I am jealous of that cat.
22:34 Nike Krancjar with the shot. His father on the sideline looks very well dressed tonight. He is much more stylish than that Togo coach. How could you wear jeans in 90 degree heat at the World Cup?
21:45 Game starting to bog down a bit in the midfield. Can we watch a Nike commercial with Brazil instead?
20:15 Lucio is probably the player I know the least on Brazil’s roster. He wins that award tonight. Congratulations to Lucio, Mr. Lucio and Mrs. Lucio.
19:24 Croatian cross is knocked out by Roberto Carlos and there is a corner. Headed away without a threat. Brazil has had the better run of play but hasn’t been able to crack the board yet.
17:45 Referee letting both teams play but it hasn’t been physical yet. I’m surprised Croatia isn’t knocking Brazil around a little more.
16:18 Croatia defense looking a bit vulnerable but Ronaldo isn’t moving well out there. This might be a night when Adriano or Kaka have to come through. What a luxury Brazil has.
15:15 Roberto Carlos might spend all night firing away over the goal. For an older player the bald one still got game.
14:07 Roberto Carlos with a bomb and the Croatian keeper is forced to knock it over the bar. Ronaldinho follows up with a shot that requires another save. A couple of close calls there.
13:46 Someone needs to lend Prso a vowell for his last name. He is a talented player even with his last name limitations. Keep an eye out for him. #9 for Croatia.
12:14 Both teams playing lots of men behind the ball and don’t want to give up the advantage near the box. Hopefully Brazil will open ip the pace a bit or I might need to get another beer. That France match was a stinker, eh?
11:02 The Croatian kits make me feel dizzy. They are starting to grow on me. I think I’ll head to a pizza shop after the match.
9:57 Ronaldinho tries to connect long with Ronaldo but it is well off the mark. A bit of a slow start to the game as both teams work out the nerves.
8:23 Kaka gets a pass in the middle of the field and hammers it high and wide over the bar. Still no score.
7:55 Both teams feeling each other out a bit. Croatia showing no fear against the tournament favorites. They earn a corner kick and Dida skies up to grab it.
6:14 Every other player on Croatia is named Kovac. That is convenient when you LiveBlog.
5:12 Croatia defense a bit too quick with the pass. Can’t afford to turn the ball over as much against this Brazil quartet up front. Wouldn’t want to be the Croatia keeper tonight. Actually, I would, but I suck in net.
4:05 Croatia attacks down the left side and gets a shot off but it is well off the mark. Croatia is going to try to attack this Brazil defense and see if it is vulnerable to speed.
3:03 Brazil getting the samba into play early with Ronaldinho dancing around like a ballerina. What a joy to watch.
2:17 Ronaldo knocked to the turf and a tremor is felt in Berlin. He is packing some weight. I bet he plays well though.
1:35 Corner kick to Brazil. Ronaldinho lines up to take it. His shirt is untucked and it is a kick that sails wide. No threat.
:29 Brazil hasn’t scored yet. They’re overrated. Just kidding.
Kickoff We are underway in Berlin with the defending champions Brazil taking on the third place finishers from 1998 Croatia. Berlin is rocking. Thanks for joining in and for leaving your comments during the match. For those scoring at home I am enjoying a cold pilsner right now. My apologies to those of you who are working and unable to imbibe too.

France Vs Switzerland :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 14th, 2006
France and Switzerland finishes the second draw of the tournment and it finished 0-0.
Full-Time: Thank goodness that borefest is over. Switzerland weren’t as uninspiring as, say Poland or Paraguay, and they had their share of chances which could have made this a real contest. The French showed they know where the goal is, but Henry could not find his normal killer instinct. Let’s hope he can get it back as it would be a shame for a player of his obvious talent to have a poor World Cup. The French can probably argue they were good enough to win it, but I wouldn’t say they dominated. Looking at the rest of the group, they probably aren’t unhappy with the result though.
92:26 - Frei misses a header from point blank range and get a yellow card for this trouble. Replay shows it’s well deserved after using his hand ala Maradona to try and score. He still missed which shows he’s not as talented as Maradona.
91:35 - Free kick for the Swiss wide right, surely the last attack of the game.
89:40 - Saha chest down beautifully for Dhorasoo but Tiramisu fires inches wide. Would have been a wonderful finish to an otherwise uninspiring game.
88:50 - I really don’t want this game to end as a draw. Who will step up and be a hero. Henry has ballted hard, but his shooting boots were left in the dressing room. Perhaps Trezuguet pawned those too. He’s a sneaky little bugger.
87:12 - A close up of Saha shows he’s trimmed his hair. Is this a disply of team support for those less fortunate in the team (cough…Zidane…cough…Barthez…cough…Henry).
85:25 - Degen suffering from some cramps. My girlfriend usually likes to eat chocolate when she has cramps. Luckily Switzerland is known for its chocolate and I fully expect Degen to recover swiftly. He’ll probably also ask me to mow the lawn during the next game.
82:00 - Nice one-two between Wiltord and Zidane. Wiltord jams his knee into the pitch under challenge and needs attention. he looks to be ok, but I can’t look at more replays of that. It just looks painful. In fact, Wiltord has been replaced by the very French sounding Dhorasoo. No bling for Dhorasoo as he throws his wedding ring at the French bench before running onto the field. Don’t worry Mrs Dhorasoo, he still loves you and Trezuguet isn’t ruinning into the locker rooms to pawn it off. Honest.
80:55 - Substitution for the Swiss. The equally wonderfully named Wicky makes way for Xavier Margairaz. I hope they’re not shutting up shop. This game is still here for the taking.
80:00 - Vieira earns the jeers of the crowd - French and Swiss alike - after a poor cross into the area. Just not seeing the quality we’d expect from a French team.
77:50 - Just struck me that we’v barely seen any shots from outside the area today. Certainly none from outrageous distances like we’v seen in other games. If there were any doubts about the effectiveness of the Teimgeist ball when shooting from long ranges, I think those have been answered in the opening days of the World Cup. Neither team today has tried their luck.
74:30 - Substitution for the Swiss. Mueller comes off and is replaced by Djourou who plays for Arsenal. Let’s hope he has an attacking bone in his body.
73:03 - Swiss really digging in now. I don’t know if we’ll see much of them in attack for the rest of the game unless they get a lucky break.
71:20 - Yellow card for the Swiss player Cabanas after a sliding tackle on Sagnol. Yellow card for Zidane after he tried to get on with the game and the ref decided he should have waited for the whistle. Bit harsh in my opinion.
69:52 - Sad point of the match. Ribery is out of the game. There is no more Ribery. On the plaus side, Louis Saha is much, much easier to type. I’ll try to work in an occasional Ribery for those following along.
67:33 - Players taking advantage of the break in play to suck down some water. Still very hot in Stuttgart. Free kick to the Swiss on the right side. Zidane clears and Magnin gets a touch of the magic spray. Replay shows his ankle twsisted like a pretzel. I’m impressed with the qualities of the magic spray.
66:00 - Still no replay of the Swis chance. Must be a French TV director. There we go, now I see it. Fantastic save with his feet by Barthez. Croupet will have to grudgingly give him that one.
64:30 - Great chance for Switzerland. Gygax’s header at the far post well saved by the Bald One. France is beatable with this defence. Of course, any team is beatable the longer it stays 0-0.
63:00 - Yellow card for Abidal for kicking the ball into the crowd after it had already gone out. The free kick sees Barthez awkwardly punch it away. He mutst have had problems seeing that.
61:44 - Nice chance for the Swiss capably defended by the French. No Maginot Line here today. I think I have to mention that at least once today, it’s compulsory. Props to those in the comments who beat me too it.
60:06 - More fouls starting to come thick and fast. Let’s hope the ref can keep this under control.
59:23 - Ribery has a shot blocked on the penalty area and I get to say his name again. Swiss fans and I are happy for different reasons.
57:25 - Not much imagination from the Swiss in attack. They’re standing in a line in midfield and you could throw a blanket over them, to borrow a cliche.
55:35 - Philipp Degen booked for the Swiss after tugging on Zidane’s shirt. Let’s hope Zidane’s little face holding routine did not influence the referee there.
54:08 - No Beckanbauer sightings in this game as yet. Is that a snub for the French team? He was with Platini at the previous match. Speaking of the French master, where is he today? Should he not be watching this game?
53:00 - Shot of Gygax on the sideline as a potential substitute for the Swiss. His name sounds like a drug. Maybe it can help Zidane and Barthez with some hair restoration.
51:10 - Ribery. I just like saying his name.
49:50 - Nice attack by Switzerland that does not result in a shot after Degen is blocked out of it on the 18 yard box. French counter sees Henry drifting left, but is eventually called offside after a one-two with Ribery.
48:10 - Vieira shoots from the edge of the area and Henry nearly blocks it while trying to get out of the way. Getting hit might actually have directed it goalwards. Story of the day for French shooting.
46:45 - Hard man Vieira bumps ‘keeper Zuberbuehler. The Swiss are a physical though and no handbags were thrown.
45:10 - Second half underway. Sun will be right in Barthez’s face for much of it. A good idea for the Swiss to shoot early and from distance.
Anyone have opinions about the handball in the box? I’m sure our Referee blogger will have somethign to say about it and I’ve been impressed with his breakdowns of the various games’ controversial decisions. This could be another. My take is that the ref made the right choice.
Half-time: Pretty even half, France looking the better team, but flashes of danger from the Swiss. I picked the Swiss as draw specialists before the tournament and they’re proving me right. I say that now because every other prediction I’ve made has not come true and I want to see a result in this game, not a draw. If I say it, it can’t be true, so come on boys, give us a goal.
44:10 - Swiss player Barnetta booked for a foul I missed. I gotta learn how to type without looking at my fingers.
43:23 - Most of France’s breaks have come from back Swiss defending - committing in isolated areas and missing the tackle which allows the French to pick their pass in the penalty area. Too bad their pass selection has so far been poor.
40:49 - Swiss defender Magnin booked at the next break in play. Could not have been for the hack on Henry as there was no free kick at the time. Strange decision from the referee. Henry back on the pitch and he appears fine.
40:15 - Henry is down after stretching to keep a ball in play. He’s off the pitch so Switzerland is under no obligation to kick the ball out of play. Whistles from the crowd but what can the Swiss do?
38:45 - Henry again released by Zidane but his shot is straight at the Swiss ‘keeper, Zuberbuehler. Henry will have to find his range soon if he keeps getting all these chances. Switzerland will have to find a way to deal with him or cut off his supply line.
37:00 - Ribery breaks into the Swiss box but for some reason gives up the resposibility of shooting in favour of a pass that goes behind Henry who shoots with less power and the ball strikes the hand of the Swiss defender. Could have a case for handball but I agree with the referee. The player did not move towards the ball with his hand and his head was turned in the other direction to protect himself.
35:40 - Very late flag for offside against Henry on a Zidane pass. Replay shows it was the right decision. Starting to hear the French fans wind up now.
32:40 - Nice close up camera work of the dribbling skills of Philipp Degen of Switzerland. We haven’t seen too much of that this World Cup, but then again, Brazil has not taken the stage yet. Stay tuned for our liveblog during that match later tonight.
30:50 - Shot just over the bar from Ribery. Nice chance. Saying his name makes me laugh: Riberte, Requality, fRanternity. Ahhhh, liveblogging, it makes no sense.
30:10 - Sagnol tripped while defending for France. Contender for Flop of the Day.
29:14 - Zidane tripped and another look at those special boots. Let’s hope they have the magic touch today.
27:56 - Does anyone else want to paint a moustache on Barthez to see how ridiculous it would look? Or is that just me?
26:40 - Sustained pressure from France now on the edge of the Swiss area, little one-twos involving Zidane. But it coms to nothing and Switzerland breaks free.
22:50 - Great free kick which comes back off the post. Frei only needed the slightest touch after the offside trap was Les Miserables. He couldn’t direct the rebound goalwards and the danger passed. Huge chance for Switzerland, big wake-up call for France.
21:50 - Nice period of posession for the Swiss. Results in a foul by Vieira about 40 yards out.
20:00 - Nice ball from Zidane puts Heny into space in the Swiss penalty area, but his touch and the defence pushes him wide and he can only deliver a cross across the goal face without any venom, nor any support.
19:40 - Game reaching somewhat of a stalemate in midfield. The crowd doing their best to liven things up.
16:40 - Switzerland is spelled Schweiz in German which is a lot shorter to type considering using that for the duration. Then again, I have copy & paste. France is Frankreich, which sounds extremely German and not at all French. Plus it’s harder to type. However, I love Germany in French - le Allemange. Sounds so much sexier.
14:00 - Vieira bangs his shot into the pitch and it bounces high over the crossbar. Shot of French coach Domenech on the sideline looking far trendier than Otto Pfister.
13:05 - Instead an angled cross to the far post, headed clear by Switzerland. Corner France and the screws are starting to turn.
12:22 - Hard foul on Wiltord. This is Zidane range.
10:20 - Zidane brought down. Did he borrow some boots from a Swedish player? What colour are those. On the plus side they’re easily noticeable in the shadow.
09:34 - Switzerland building nicely before giving away possession cheaply in midfield. Their game looks based on a short, quick passing game which is nioce to see after a fair amount on long ball stuff so far this World Cup.
07:01 - Zidane looks to be cruising. Much like Nedved yesterday for Czch Republic, using his experience to be involved in the game without running himself into the ground on this hot, hot day.
05:22 - Header from Henry after nice buildup play from Zidane released Wiltord, who got a nice cross that Henry just could not keep down. Good chance for France.
03:41 - Great fan support for Switzerland in the crowd today. A sea of red at the end they are defending. Fantastic last ditch tackle by France to deny a run into the box from Switzerland. It was in the shadow so I can’t tell who it was.
02:15 - Jinking run by Zidane showing shades of his younger self. I kinda want to see him do well consdering its the last time we’ll see him on the World stage.
00:30 - Switzerland kick off and once again we battle with a creeping shadow on the pitch that makes things diffucult from a viewing perspective. Let’s hope that’s not the story of the tournament.
00:01 - We’re off! Microscope is on the French team after their woeful performance in the ‘02 World Cup. The pressure and spotlight of defending champions is of them and they’ve had a solid build up despite some selection controversy and the sad loss of Cisse with a broken leg.

South Korea Vs Togo :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 14th, 2006
South Korea defeated Togo 2-1 in there opening match.
Full Time: S. Korea gets the result everyone expected but not the margin.
91:40 Romao plants himself in front of a S. Korean player and the free kick is sent back towards midfield. The crowd boos, they want another score.
91:40 I want a miracle.
90:00 3 min injury time.
88:00 One last push by Togo, free kick curls outside the goal without touching anything. Well placed kick, good set piece.
86:50 Korea’s killing time. Interesting that Togo hasn’t really looked tired in this game even though their fitness was a main concern.
85:46 Another long cross. Togo is a tall team but not that tall.
84:40 Togo corner. It’s long and Togo heads it back out.
83:02 Another field goal for S. Korea.
81:30 8.5 minutes to go and the celebrations are starting in the stadium. A bit premature if you ask me.
80:30 Sniper attempt from Kader and I thought it had a chance. A little less air.
79:09 I wonder how the S. Korean media will react to the 1-0 half time lead of the Sparrowhawks?
77:25 I’m looking for a Togo score and if it weren’t for that pesky offsides rule I would have gotten it.
73:45 S. Korea has another great shot blocked and the Togo goalie hangs onto it after a moment.
72:15 A glance off the defender bends Ahn’s shot out of the goalie’s reach.
72:00 Goal S. Korea!
68:40 I hate to say it, but Adebayor actually wasn’t long enough to get a good touch on that ball. Would have been an easy goal.
67:50 Subs for S. Korea. Kim on, Lee off.
66:19 I almost like to see S. Korea getting close to the goal because Togo’s best chances have come from counterattacks.
65:30 Routine save by the Togo keeper but I don’t really trust him.
64:22 Adebayor is the star of ths squad. He needs to take that shot instead of passing it back to center.
62:23 A cross from the right dies in front of the net and Togo gets a great shot. Misses high but it made Sean’s “Togo COULD score again” comment look brilliant.
59:30 Togo’s Malm falls down back pedaling and does his knee pretty good. He’s off the field and Forson comes on.
58:26 Another shot too high for S. Korea. The NY Giants fieldgoal kicker scouts are writing down names.
56:01 Togo’s defense has some holes but they’re doing a decent job being physical. One mistake and a penalty evens the score and S. Korea looks like it’s descending for the kill. My guess is it will be 2-1 in the next 10 minutes.
54:08 Lee Chun Soo puts the kick in the upper left corner and the keeper misses. Goal S. Korea.
52;04 Mohamed Kader gets a kick in the foot and he’s down for awhile. Second yellow for Jean Paul Abalo when S. Korea breaks ago and its a free kick for S. Korea.
49:19 S. Korea probably got a very stern lecture at the half. Card for S. Korea but I missed who go it. Stupid typing.
47:50 Mohamed Kader has moves and gets around 4 defenders to get a shot off. Adebayor who?
46:35 A free kick for Korea and an open shot that wasn’t finished and I’m beginning to a trend in Korea’s chances. I’m hoping it stays that way.
46:00 We’re ready to watch some history here. 45 minutes of tense defense for Togo.
Halftime: Togo’s bicycle kick attempt was a bit awkward at the end but the rest of the half looked good for what was supposed to be an overmatched Togo squad. They’re up 1-0 off a beautiful ground goal by Mohamed Kader.
45:00 A cross across the goal is too close for comfort and then a header makes me long for half time.
44:18 Togo is about the size of West Virginia in the United States and they’re leading against S. Korea.
42:22 The half is winding down and the Koreans look frantic, their early chances got them nothing.
41:18 Great shot by Senaya. Almost got through to the top of the net.
40:30 1-0 Togo with a free kick.
39:40 South Korea is relentless. They’re going to score.
38:14 Korea is getting some open angles for shots but they’re all wide. It’s making me nervous.
36:59 Pfister looks like a pimp moonlighting as a coach with that chain.
34:48 Corner for Korea looks like it’s headed toward the goal but it’s just the camera angle. Then the follow booted into the stands. Everyone here wants the upset.
33:33 Free kick for S. Korea blocked by the wall.
32:33 Best goal of the Cup by Kader.
30:45 Mohamed Kader with a beautiful floor shot across the goalie. Best goal Togo has ever scored. Buy your buddy a beer and see if they can hold on.
30:40 GOOOOAAAAALLLLL TOOGOOOO!
29:04 Free kick s. korea from deep on the right side and Togo takes possession.
27:04 My expectations are on the rise for Togo, they haven’t trained but they’re competing and look like they’ll be a danger to draw against S. Korea. Barring a second half fitness collapse I expect a close game.
25:01 62/38 advantage Korea for possession.
23:05 Two yellows for Togo. Free kick for Korea goes wide left.
22:39 Korea levels a Togo player and the world cup yellow card party continues. Only the card went to Togo… I don’t get it.
20:40 A little squib through the defense to the keeper and the crowd is nearly dying. Either they have no idea what they’re watching or they want to be on the field.
18:40 Togo levels Park on the right side and S. Korea gets a good cross out of it.
17:00 S. Korea gets a chance down the left side again and the stadium goes nuts at a different volume than other games I’ve seen. I can’t imagine what it will be like if they score. No danger of that so far.
15:30 Togo with a cross that would have been dangerous if it wasn’t 18 feet in the air.
13:00 I hear that Adebayor makes 30K a week at Arsenal. I’m curious what the possession time differential is in this game. My guess is about even.
11:15 Offsides Togo after another long range pass.
9:00 Mostly midfield play the first 9 minutes with an occasional attack. Togo passed from long range and got a decent run at the ball. The shot missed high.
8:30 Adebayor is definetly the man for this squad. Get him the ball.
6:40 Togo looking more cohesive than expected. Nick’s getting excited.
5:30 Decent attack by Togo’s Adebayor.
4:42 A glimpse of Togo coach Otto Pfister shows him dressed to go out clubbing in jeans and jacket. I guess we know where he was going to go if he left the team.
3:00 A lot of expectations on S. Korea, but they seem pretty composed and in control. They’re mostly just booting it into the Togo end and the Togo keeper is sending it back. Not bad so far.
1:38 If Togo can keep Korea scoreless for more than 4 minutes they’re doing better than Angola.
00:32 A pretty aggressive attack down the left side by korea. Free kick after a trip. Nothing comes of it.
00:00 The 13 June games have started, my next 9 hours are set in stone.

Italy Vs Ghana :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 13th, 2006
Italy beats Ghana 2-0 in their opening match against the African Champs.
Full time Italy comes away with a deserved 2-0 win against a spirited Ghana side. Pirlo and Iaquinta are the goal scorers for the Azzurri who joing the Czech Republic atop the Group E table with three points. An impressive debut for Ghana but the Black Stars come up short. Thanks for joining us for today’s liveblogs. We’ll be typing like crazy until the end of the tournament so come back again. Be safe kids.
89:14 Things we learned from this match. Italy is strong. Ghana is better than anticipated. There is a player named Pimpong in the World Cup.
88:15 Ghana has nothing to be ashamed of from this performance. They played an on form Italy team very well. A couple of breaks either way in this might have been a different result.
87:03 Iaquinta picks up the yellow card for being a butthead.
85:13 Italy will play the next five minutes trying not to pick up cards. My on the spot analysis says they’ll have no problem against the US. Ghana might give the Czech Republic a game but I see the two European teams advancing at this point. Bold prediction, I know.
83:47 I feel bad for Ghana. They’ve played a great game and to make a mistake like that in the final minutes is heartbreaking. Italy deserves the win but still….
82:21 GOALLLL!!!! Italy. Horrible mistake by the Ghana defender Kafour leads to an Iaquinta goal. 2-0 Italy. Game over.
81:29 Del Piero on and Toni off. Very solid game from Luca Toni. What a luxury it is for Italy to have Del Piero come off the bench.
80:45 Essien with a long shot that isn’t close. If you don’t like this game then you should consider a new hobby. I recommend knitting.
79:46 Ghana fans and neutrals on their feet imploring their team to score a goal. Can they follow the lead of the Aussies and pull off a late game miracle?
78:03 Ghana player with a serious dive in the box. He split two defenders and then lept to the ground. Good no call.
76:31 Iaquinta gets the magic spray and he is ready to run back onto the pitch. I need some magic spray for my fingers. They ache.
74:45 Iaquinta breaks free but the flag is up. He was brought down by the Ghana player and now needs to have his leg amputated. Replay shows that he is a cm offside. That was as close as it gets.
73:49 Pimpong is bouncing all over the field for Ghana. Aha, finally had an excuse to write that.
73:02 Ghana leads possession 53-47 but Italy is ahead where it counts. 1-0 Azzurri on a goal by Pirlo in the 40th.
72:16 Ghana has twenty minutes to make history. Can you imagine how exciting it must be in that country right now. Ghana player pushed down in the box but no call. Probably the right no call.
70:01 It is killing me that Pimpong is playing in the latest game when I am tired and out of jokes. His name sounds awesome in German. Who knows how it translates.
67:50 Pimpong on for Amoah. They have a player named Pimpong. Wow, you have to love Ghana.
66:10 Perrotta with a dead on shot. Ghana keeper Kingston having himself a great game. Apologies for ripping on him earlier. He looks dodgy but in a good way now.
64:41 Asamoah gets a yellow card for a dangerous slide tackle. The yello cards are starting to come out in this one but the play isn’t especially dirty.
63:07 Appiah finds some space and rips a shot well wide. Ghana creating chances. Iaquinta in for Gilardino for Italy.
61:23 Camoranesi gets a yellow for tripping a Ghana player. He might also be penalized for having an out of control ponytail.
60:12 Every time I think Ghana is about ready to crack they start stringing together passes. They have kept their composure nicely and have put themselves in a position to get a result.
58:22 I’m starting to think that this game and the Argentina-Ivory Coast match have been the best played of the entire competition. End to end excitement in both games.
56:40 Totti with ice on his leg on the bench. I think he just got kicked and will end up with one of those ugly blue bruises. I have one myself from kicking a door the other night after a goal. Wasn’t a pretty scene here.
55:18 Totti gets cracked on the leg and he is being replaced by Camoranesi. Don’t think Totti is seriously hurt but given his injury history probably is a good move to get him out.
54:42 In my next life I really want to be a third string keeper. You sit on the bench picking grass without a worry in the world.
54:01 Ghana controlling the action the past few minutes. These Black Stars can play. Will they be the first African team to get a point this tournament?
52:32 Lots of back and forth action. This game has been played at a very good pace. Compared to the earlier matches today this one is much more entertaining. Still 1-0 Italy of a Pirlo goal in the 40th.
51:45If I haven’t thanked you already, I am much obliged for your comments and for you coming to World Cup Blog. We’re liveblogging every game so tell your friends and loved ones. Heck, tell your enemies too.
50:31 Gilardino breaks free and hammers a shot that Kingston kick saves away. The Ghana keeper has played a good game despite looking dodgy at times.
48:45 If only Puma knew that Ghana would be so decent they might have spent a little more time designing a kit. These Ghana kits are boring with a capital ugly.
47:45 This is probably the best Italy has started a tournament in a long time. They are playing very well tonight against a Ghana team that is going to prove to be dangerous this competition.
46:31 Italy breaks free but the cross is just out of the range of Toni. Again he gives the constipated look. The Italian team is very dramatic. Makes me laugh every time.
45:13 For those scoring at home I am enjoying a nice Hefeweizen this half. God bless German beer. My apolgies to those of you who can’t drink and work.
45:01 Shillia in for Pappoe in the Ghana backline. Game is back on.
Halftime The first 45 minutes were quite entertaining with both sides having a number of chances to score. Italy looks solid and Ghana does not look like a minnow. The only goal is by Pirlo in the 40th minute. A real beauty of a goal. I’m off to get another beer and will be back right before the start of the half. What are your thoughts on the match thus far?
44:56 Rossi with a near goal but a diving Kingston breaks it up. Could have been a crushing goal before the whistle.
43:45 Ghana with space to operate in the midfield but Italy comes back to recover. Shouldn’t have much added time.
42:45 Referee largely a non factor to this point. Just the way it should be. There was a shot of a Ghana fan after the Italy goal and it was just crushing. We’ve all been there.
42:00 Ghana looking to settle the play down. Italy is always tough to come back on. My guess is this Ghana team will throw everything they have at the game.
40:29 A well earned goal by Italy. How will Ghana respond to the adversity?
39:15 GOALLLLL! Andrea Pirlo drills it from just outside the box right into the corner of the net. Very nice goal.
38:02 Essien wins the corner kick. Played into the box and Buffon comes down with it. Wow, that is an ugly keeper’s kits. What color is that?
37:25 So far a very cleanly played game with lots of pace. Both teams have attacks that are worthy. Italy playing a much more offensive style of football than in years past. Really quite refreshing to see.
35:12 Luca Toni continuing to wreak havoc but unable to put the ball in the goal. This game is being played in waves of attack.
34:24 If I am Ghana I don’t want to see Totti line up over a free kick. What a cannon of a shot he has.
33:25 Both sides could be on the board at this point. Lots of close calls. Still 0-0.
32:17 Totti knocked down by an indvertant elbow. Free kick Azzurri. Totti blasts it from 40 out and Kingston has to rise to knock it over the bar. This game is coming to life in a big way.
31:05 Papoe with another golden chance for Ghana. If the Black Stars would keep their shots down they might actually take the lead.
30:11 Essien breaks free but his left footed shot sails wide. Essien showing his skill in this one.
30:00 One third of the way through the match and Italy has had the better chances, but credit must go to Ghana for staying composed and making this a game.
28:22 Asamoah with a shot from long range and it is just off the mark. Buffon might not have gotten to that if it was on goal. Good action now.
26:54 That was just a splendid individual move by Toni. He beat his defender and nailed it but the bar is Ghana’s 12th man.
26:11 Ghana creating some chances but looks reluctant to shoot. Luca Toni goes one on one with the defender and he drills the bottom of the cross bar. How did that not go in? Close
24:01 Italy looking sharp. They also are on form with disappointed looks. The wave is going around the stadium and Ghana clears it out of their end. Italy smells blood.
23:05 Totti starting to come to life for Italy. He seems to be moving well coming off of that injury.
22:11 How about this Group E? Czechs looked great today and both Italy and Ghana look decent. Corner kick Italy and it is eaten up by Kingston.
19:50 Asamoah showing nice skill for the Black Stars. The German annoucer constantly refers to Essien as Michael Essien, Chelsea London.
18:34 In absolute contrast to Angola, Ghana looks comfortable playing in the World Cup against a good team.
17:34 No shock in this statement, but the Italian defense looks very well organized.
15:43 By this point last evening C. Ronaldo had already had 25 pouts. None on either side thus far. The Italian fans are singing a White Stripes tune. Bonus points for them.
14:59 italy free kick and it is blasted over the bar by Totti who also gives the I’m constipated and not feeling good about life look.
14:30 Anybody know what font they use on the Italy uniforms? Has to be one of the least readable choices out there.
13:00 Italy with the better run of play thus far but Ghana looks like they can play with the big boys. This one could be interesting if the Ghana keeper gets his head in the game.
11:50 Wow, this Ghana keeper Kingston is something to watch and not in a good way. He is all over the place and nowhere near the ball. My men’s league team keeper might be better.
11:15 Free kick for Ghana and it is booted away by Italy which races down the pitch. Luca Toni nearly hits in a cross and Ghana dodges a bullet.
9:40 De Rossi kicks the Ghana player down just outside the box and he is awarded with a little yellow card from the Brazilian ref.
8:45 I once knew a guy who got malaria in Ghana. John, if you are reading this I hope you are feeling better. Little action to this point.
7:45 The Italy captian Cannavaro heads one over the crossbar and then gives the “I’m constipated and feeling bad” look.
6:55 Italy corner kick. This Ghana keeper Kingston looks unsteady. Hit over the endline for another corner, which is punched away by the Black Stars keeper.
5:45 Ghana standing toe-to-toe with Italy. They don’t appear to be overwhelmed by the moment.
4:00 I’ve decided that Luca Toni is my favorite name to hear in German. Followed closely by Eric Addo. Nothing happening to this point. For those of you at work this might be a good time to work on something.
2:39 Shot of Ghana coach who is known as Doya. The controversial Serb has somehow avoide being sacked before the World Cup. Not quite the mess of Togo but still not a good situation.
1:32 Luca Toni hits the turf. Ahhhh the familiar site of Italian players on the ground.
1:02 Both teams come out running faster than the ball. Lots of nervous energy. We’ve seen how important early moments in the games are this competition.
Kickoff We’re underway in the 11th match of the 2006 World Cup. Ghana makes its World Cup debut against 3-time champion Italy.

Czech Republic Vs USA :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 13th, 2006
Czech Republic beats the USA 3-0
Full time 3-0. Czech-mate (sorry).
90:00 (+1) Did Josh Wolff really come on? Where is he?
89:45 Czech fans “ole”ing their sides passes, just to underline how heavily they have outclassed the US.
88:30 Plasil shoots over after beating His Not So Holiness Eddie Pope to the ball.
87:40 Donovan pops up in the box, brings it down but has his shot blocked.
86:15 Good inswinging free kick from Donovan, but it’s cleared easier than a check from Bill Gates.
84:40 Patrick Swayze nails O’Brien. Nedved has been different class today. Balboa (ESPN commentary) just suggested persuading Nedved to play MLS. Think he might find it too easy, based on today’s game.
82:40 Maybe this is the result to make FIFA rethink their world ranking system. Silver lining and all that.
80:33 EJ shoots just over. He’s looked US’s liveliest player. I’d like to see him start next game.
79:20 Convey keeps crossing, but it’s not aimed at anyone. Unless he’s actually aiming for Czech defenders. If so, he’s having the game of his life.
76:40 Arena adds insult to injury by bringing on Josh Wolff for Brian McBride.
75:30 GOAL! Nedved plays Rosicky through, who flicks it past Nedved. Stick a fork in this game, it’s done.
74:24 Donovan has found the strings and started to pull. He found Convey wide who crossed, nearly finding Eddie Johnson. Can’t see the US scoring twice past Cech though. I spy Josh Wolff’s pucked eyebrows ready to come on.
72:45 Another aimless attack from US ends up in Cech’s hands.
72:22 A poorly thumb isn’t exactly a manly injury, but I imagine it’s painful.
71:00 Pope with a great sliding challenge on Nedved. Pope’s holding his thumb. Looks like it could be broken.
70:00 Johnson flashed one wide from outside the box. Sadly, that’s the US’s best effort since Reyna hit the post.
67:30 Rosicky strikes another beauty that hits the bar. That boy has some sort of laser guided system in his right boot. If Bush is watching he’ll be looking to buy that technology.
67:11 O’Brien and Balboa can’t decide if Group E is the group of death. Looks like it might be for the US.
66:00 Convey with flashy work, but Czech defence not buying it.
64:30 DMB takes the ball off Jankulkovski’s toe in the box. First good thing DMB has done. Corner.
63:00 More wasteful passing from US. Have they confused the World Cup with MLS regular season?
61:25 Poborsky hits the side netting with a volley from a tight angle. The CR’s passing is detroying the US. They look more organized and more confident.
60:10Plasil (Reyna’s victim) leaves on a stretcher.
58:00 Reyna must have set his watch wrong because that tackle was late. He gets a yellow.
55:15 Rosicky splits the US defence with a pass but Lokvenc is offside. Looked too easy though.
53:00 Reyna with a fairly harmless tackle on Nedved, who rolls around like he’s being electrocuted.
50:30 Ujfalusi goes close with a header from Poborsky free kick. Even without Koller they’re beating the US in the air.
49:00 Quick shot of Koller limping, waving to the crowd.
48:45 Convey nearly finds McBride with a low cross. McBride’s movement has been slow, like he’s got lead in his boots.
47:30 How long will O’Brien last? Place your bets now.
46:30 Looks like US will go 3 at the back. This could be a good second half.
45 Second half underway. If USA pull this back to 2-2 this will be the “Miracle on Grass”.
-Mastroeni and Cherundolo are out.
-Looks like Eddie Johnson and John O’Brien are coming in. Nice.
-I’d like to see Eddie Johnson ready to go second half, maybe Clint Dempsey too. USA need some of Dempsey’s attitude and Johnson’s recent form has been impressive.
-The Czech Republic have been absolutely outstanding. Rosicky’s goal was like a guided missile, and they’ve gobbled up some aimless US crosses without any trouble.
Half-Time 2-0 to CR, but Koller out injured. USA have to make serious changes for the second half.
45:00 (+1) Onyewu uses those pythonesque muscles to put in a massive long throw, but Cech picks it off.
45:00 Koller gets a round of applause as he leaves. Doesn’t look good for him, his tournament could be over.
43:14 Lokvenc to replace Koller. Feel for Koller, he’s a top man, but that’s a huge break for the USA.
42:00 Replay shows his hamstring went, nothing to do with the challenge. That’s what happens when you pass 30. Koller leaves the field on a stretcher.
41:30 Onyewu floors Koller.
40:00 I’d settle for making it to half time at 2-0 now. Maybe Arena is working on a tactical masterplan for the second 45.
38:30 Karel Bruckner looking mean. He has nothing to complain about right now, and should cheer up.
37:20 Gooch not doing his reputation any favours with headers like that.
36:00 That’s depressing. Four years ago at this stage USA were 3-0 up against Portugal.
35:00 GOAL! Wish I hadn’t said that just. Onyewu heads it out straight to Rosicky who lashes it past Keller from 30 or so yards. I blame Bush. 2-0 to CR.
33:24 OK. Feeling more positive now. No longer fearing a repeat of 1990 (5-1 if you were wondering).
32:00 Dave O’Brien just used the word “defensing”.
31:00 His Holiness The (Eddie) Pope does a great job to muscle Nedved out of possession in the box.
28:50 DMB’s attempt to emulate Reyna’s shot is more than a little off target. They may never find that ball.
27:45 Reyna hits the post from distance after a good passing move. More short passing please.
26:30 Convey has the right attitude, but runs into a Czech defender.
24:15 Lewis crosses high towards no one.
23:00 Nedved with a nice outside of the foot cross, Grygera heads it just over. I’m fearing the worst.
22:00 Great cross from Reyna, but McBride looked at it like he’d never seen one before. Come on guys, sort it out.
20:00 Nothing convincing from the US. The counter attack game plan is no good if you’re losing.
16:33 Beasley losing possession. He’s looking poor. Again.
16:00 Donovan wins a free kick running at defenders.
15:00 Donovan hasn’t scored for 15 games. Now would be a good time to start up again.
13:30 US with possession, but CR sitting back. Just lobbing it into the box isn’t going to work. Donovan will never win a header and McBride can’t do it all on his own.
10:00 Lewis and Convey working together this time. They win a corner, Pope heads at goal from distance but it’s tame. He’s no Jan Koller.
9:30 Nedved offside from a one-two, but still had no trouble passing through the US defence.
7:23 That Czech goal was ruthless. It came from a Lewis pushing too far down the left side and they countered quickly. Wonder what Bush’s reaction was.
6:00 Terrible start from the US. Donovan goes down a la Nedved, but no free kick.
4:45 GOAL! Czech Republic. Koller got the wrong side of Pope to head in a cross from the right. Onyewu looked like he was lost.
3:50 Nedved goes down. Onyewu tackled him late and gets a yellow. Gooch lasted 4 minutes before being booked. The resulting free kick was harmless though.
2:50 Cherundolo floats a cross/shot over the bar. USA need his crossing to be better than that.
2:00 Grygera shoots but no danger.
1:00 US defend Czech free kick. Comes to nothing as Mastroeni is fouled.
0 We’re off!

Australia Vs Japan :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 13th, 2006
Australia beats Japan 3-1.
Full time A dull game turned into an exciting one with Australia pulling out the victory thanks to three goals in the final 10 minutes. Tim Cahill scored twice and John Aloisi finished off the scoring to lift the Socceroos to their first World Cup win in history. Three points to Australia. A tough loss for Japan.
91:57 GOALLLLL! John Aloisi scores for Australia on a great indiviual effort and this one is all but over. What a turn of events in the final 10 minutes.
90:00 Dramatic turn of events in the final ten minutes. Tim Cahill lifts the continent of Australia onto his shoulders and likely gives his team its first World Cup win ever.
88:47 GOAALLLLL!!! Wow, Tim Cahill hammers one from outside and gives his country the lead. Two goals in the past five minutes from Cahill. There is your hero for today.
87:47 Fukinishi almost drills one in for Japan. Wow, that was close. Suddenly this game has come to life.
87:00 Australia not satisfied with a tie continues to attack. They are the more aggressive of the two teams. Will we see a last minute hero emerge for either side?
86:23 Not the prettiest of goals by Cahill and perhaps a mistake by the Japanese keeper for leaving his line, but it gets the job done for Australia. This one should finish in a tie if the football gods are watching.
83:40 GOALLL!! Tim Cahill punches one home for Australia as there is a mad scramble in the box. 1-1
83:10 Australia with a free kick from 25 out. Aloisi drills it on goal and it is saved by the Japan keeper who bounces up to give his defender a joyous high five.
81:46 Australia ahead in shots 15-5 but the score still is in Japan’s favor. This game certainly hasn’t been one for the ages, especially the second half. Let’s hope the next two matches are more interesting.
80:19 Josh Kennedy has come on to create some chances up top for Australia but other than Viduka’s shots there hasn’t been much from the Socceroos attack to this point.
79:57 Japan starting to knock the ball around and look like a football team. It has taken 80 minutes to see some decent passing.
77:57 Australia is a continent, right? Does that mean that Australia is the first continent to play in the World Cup? Ono on for Yanigasawa for Japan.
76:43 Aloisi is in thee game for a couple of minutes and picks up a yellow card for a slight shiver to the back. Great bit of gymnastics there.
75:45 Takahara might be man of the match for Japan. He continues to extend the Australia defense but is unable to connect with his mates up top. He also might make our all-tournament worst hair team.
74:27 Aloisi in for Wilkshire for the Socceroos. Australia looking for an offensive spark up front.
73:00 Neither team has really controlled this game. A tie might be the fair result but first Australia must figure out a way to crack the Japan defense.
71:32 Australia starting to mount an attack behind the bull of a player Viduka but Japan has the back fairly bottled up.
70:00 Twenty minutes to go. Does Australia have anything left to even this one up?
68:16 Australia good free kick opportunity from just outside the box straight on goal. Viduka blasts it on the ground and a great save from the Japan keeper. Wow, he stretched out to save that one and keep his team in the lead.
66:16 Public service announcement: We’re liveblogging the US-Czech game and Italy-Ghana. Thanks for spending part of your day/evening/morning with us. I truly value your comments and passion for the game. Let’s keep the comments clean. Love one another my friends.
64:48 Japan attacking again. They move into the shadow and hide from sight. Australia able to clear. This has been one of the most boring 2o minutes of football thus far in the tournament.
63:15 For those who have never seen a black hole, the shadow in the Australia box is what one looks like. My eyes hurt trying to find the Japanese players when they run in there.
62:16 Anybody think either of these teams will edge out Croatia or Brazil? From what I have seen today I think the answer is probably no.
60:00 Josh Kennedy on for Craig Moore. Smart move with Moore already having a yellow. Kennedy is going to play in the Bundesliga next year. The German announcers are very proud of having a Kennedy in Germany again.
58:59 Japan having the better run of play. Australia looks to be deflated after giving up a weak goal midway through the first half.
57:12 Craig Moore with a yellow for Australia. The shadow continue to read its ugly head and I can’t even see Japan when they are attacking in the box.
56:45 This game has lacked action since the start of the second half. I’m starting to get a little jealous of those of you who are at work. You can entertain yourselves with something else.
55:24 Tanaka on for Tsuboi. The Japanese fans chant Tanaka’s name.
55:06 Hiddink still very upset on the sideline. His face is permanately pink. Tsuboi cramping up for Japan. Has to come off to the side.
52:04 Cahill on for Bresciano for the Socceroos. A good move by Hiddink if you ask me, but you didn’t, did you?
51:37 Japan with a soft cross into the box and Schwarzer plays it. Not a bad thing to try since it worked once already.
50:17 Both teams trying to feel one another out in the start of the second half. Japan is usually one of the more fit teams around so it will be interesting to see if that comes into play.
49:04 What are you people doing at work? Don’t you know this is the friggin World Cup? No work for you, folks.
47:56 Not the prettiest of football in this game, but both teams are fairly even. Wow, Takahara can really motor in the frontline for Japan.
46:18 Japan has a strong midfield but I though they were outplayed in the first half. Japan’s forwards showed great work rate and created the opportunities.
45:01 We’re underway in the second half. Will Australia be able to come back in this one or will Japan close it out?
Still halftime Interesting post on our referees blog about the lack of controversy with refs so far. Ironic considering your comments on this game.
Halftime A fairly entertaining first half of World Cup football with lots of up and down the field action. Australia had its chances but it was a crossed ball from Japan’s Nakamura in the 26th minute that is the only goal. I’m off to get a refill on the beer. I’ll be back at the start of the second half. What are your thoughts on the first half?
43:02 Australia leading the possession time 54-46. Seems about right. They have had the better opportunities but Japan is leading on the scoreboard thanks to a stange goal.
42:46 This might be the most poorly called game so far. The refs have been ok in the tournament but the crew today seems a bit lost and I am completely neutral here.
40:46 Australia free kick from outside the box. It just goes wide. Brescinao better be wearing sunscreen with that bald head of his. Nice kick.
38:57 Australia starting to accumulate fouls as Japan is eager to spend their time on the ground. Takahara gets a yellow for tossing the ball away after being called offside. He deserves a red for his rooster like hair.
37:24 The ubiqitous German shadow starting to creep onto the pitch. I read today they will be closing the roof in Frankfurt next time there is a game there to block out the sun and heat.
35:43 Yangisawa down in pain. Do you think he is a natural purple haired dude? Socceroos eagerly gulping down water while they can. Hot day here in Germany.
34:24 Socceroos continue to create opportunities but a little too eager when they are near the goal. Japan falling back to play a defensive game with the breakout counters. Takahara has some great pace to his game.
33:15 Grella shown a yellow card for a questionable tackle. Didn’t look like a yellow to me.
32:45 Hiddink very upset on the sideline. The 4th official has to restrain him. What’s that all about?
32:13 Both teams looking a little too eager. Australia expended a lot of energy early to try to get the equalizer. Japan has had troubles scoring so a soft goal early is welcome news for them.
30:03 Australia with the corner and it is headed away by Australia. The replay of that goal shows the Japan players clearly blocking Schwarzer. Tough no call.
28:26 Still kind of stunned that a quality keeper like Schwarzer would let that one in. Japan has an extra bounce in their step now that they are up a goal. Somehow I don’t think the scoring is done in this one. Wide open game.
27:00 Harry Kewell nearly answers for Australia. Tough break for the Socceroos who were playing well but get burned on a soft goal.
25:49 GOAALLLLL!! Nakamura with a cross that sales over the head of Schwarzer who was being blocked by a pair of Japan players. Strange goal
25:22 Since when did Viduka learn to pass like Zico? The big man has been impressive.
24:12 Viduke sets up BRESCIANO who hits a point blank shot right at the Japan keeper. Should have scored on that one. Australia with the better chances thus far.
23:15 Japan apparently doesn’t care much about free kicks. There efforts so far have been less than pathetic. Not a bad game as far as action though. Anyone else having fun with this World Cup?
21:45 Takahara with an excellent move to free himself and he blasts a shot just wide of the goal knocking over the keeper’s water bottles. He would have scored if his hair wasn’t so out of control.
20:15 Socceroos doing a nice job stringing together passes but having problems in the final third. They should be using their height more to their advantage. Maybe they’ll hire me after Hiddink leaves.
17:56 Free kick for Australia into the box and cleared away without a worry. Japan quickly back on the counter. That seems to be their strategy today. Will Australia’s defense hold up in the heat? You’d think so.
16:26 Japan not looking as well organized as they did in 2002. Australia looking much better than in 1974.
15:03 For those scoring at home I am enjoying a nice Erdinger white beer for this contest. It is early in the day and hot so trying to pace myself. Looks like Viduka has had a few beers in his day.
13:52 Australia finding some success on the left side but Bresciano is unable to put it on net. He hit that one all the way to France. Australia looking the better of the teams at this point.
11:56 Nice flick on in the box for Australia but it is all for nothing. The Socceroos are creating some chances but Japan is able to race right back and Fukunishi skies a shot over the bar.
10:41 Who would win a steel cage match? Viduka or Schwartzer? Both are big boys.
9:36 YANAGISAWA bringing some serious speed for Japan on the left flank. The game is starting to open up with lots of space in the midfield. Japan earns a corner.
8:15 A shot of Guus Hiddink on the Aussies sideline. I wonder how those Russian lessons are coming along. I’m willing to be he’ll lead Russia to the next World Cup. He is a quality coach.
7:02 Viduka making his presence felt early. He looks like he is stronger than Japan’s backline. As is usually the case though, you never know if Viduka can give the effort for a full 90. Good start for him though.
5:47 Viduka with not one, but two shots on goal but he is denied by Japan’s keeper. Great chances from the captain.
4:57 Australia looks like it placing Aussie rules. They could be kicking Japan all day. Might be the strategy or just their style of play.
4:03 Australia discovers the Japan end of the pitch but decides to spare their Asian friends from falling behind. Alex takes a tumble after getting chopped down by Wilshire.
2:27 In case you are curious the Japan player Alex is not originally from Japan. He is Brazilian and apparently was forced to go elsewhere since his one name is not that interesting or flashy. Not a bad player though.
1:02 Free kick opportunity for Japan right out the box. Smacks the Aussie wall right in the face. You can’t pay me enough to stand in a wall these days.
Kickoff We’re underway in a Group F clash between Australia and Japan. The Socceroos make their first World Cup appearance since 1974. The Brazilian legend Zico leads Japan into the World Cup for the second time in a row.
Portugal Vs Angola :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 12th, 2006
Portugal beats Angola 1-0.Pauleta’s fourth-minute goal proved enough for Portugal to overcome the challenge of Angola in the Africans’ first ever FIFA World Cup match in Cologne.
Full time Portugal comes away with a victory after an early goal from Pauleta. It is three points for the favorites, but credit goes to Angola for hanging in there and making a game of it in their World Cup debut.
91:36 Maniche with a bomb that is deflected over the crossbar by Ricardo. Heck of a match for the Angola keeper.
90:50 One last shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. Unofficially we have him at 32 pouts for the game.
90:00 3 minutes extra time. My heart is pounding. Come on lads.
88:37 Mateus with a shot on goal for Angola. Crowd is on its feet imploring the underdog. The final two minutes are going to be something.
88:03 Portugal might come away with three points but should they be pleased with the way they played? Hard to say. They have been very inconsistent.
87:15 Angola on the attack. Mantorras is one big boy. Angola just can’t string it together in the final third.
85:03 When you say Palancas Negras with a German accent it sounds really, really funny. Don’t mention the war.
83:52 Just to be clear I meant Figo might not be able to get up from the ground. With Viagra these days the other thing is possible no matter your age.
83:03 Figo spends a lot of time on the ground. At his age he might not be able to get up. Portugal header goes over the bar.
81:35 Portugal sub. Thiago out and Viana in. Thiago has a serious farmer’s tan.
80:46 Angola needs to go balls out this final ten minutes. It does them no good to lose by a goal. Might as well push forward and try to get a point out of this.
79:04 Valente shown a yellow card for Portugal. Figueriedo comes off for Angola. Miloy on as Angola makes its last sub.
78:45 Big round of applause to Angola for keeping this one interesting. They could have been crushed early on but they still could come away with something here if Portugal isn’t careful.
77:03 I commented yesterday that Prince William doesn’t ever sweat. Figo, on the other hand, is always sweating. Might have some kind of disorder. Hell of a player, sweat and all.
75:48 Big Phil pacing on the Portugal sideline. He has one of the great faces in sport. It looks like he is made of plastic. Great coach. Mad love for Big Phil.
74:35 The rest of the World Cup Blog staff are laughing at me as I swear at the tv. Sorry Portugal fans, but I am pulling hard for an Angola goal.
72:45 A shot in the crowd of a dude wearing a condom on his head. This is Germany and there are lots of brothels, but you don’t need to wear protection at the stadium.
71:59 Figo loses a boot and Nike smiles. That will be in the next advert.
71:35 Reports from Angola say that people there are begging their team to score a goal. Petit out and Maniche in for Portugal.
70:03 Angola’s new strategy is to boot and chase.
68:50 Loco with a shot that lives up to his name. Edson in, Ze Kalanga out for Angola. Edson is one of the least likeable players on Angola’s roster. Watch him score.
68:29 I get the feeling Angola is only going to score off a Portugal mistake or a lucky goal. 20 more minutes for a hero to emerge. If a Palancas scores he’ll get $5,000. That goes a long way in Luanda.
65:56 Miguel is having a solid game on the wing for Portugal. Figo starting to show his age some in the midfield. I expect to see a few more subs soon. A lot of tired players out there.
64:35 Would never have guessed that Angola would still be in this one after the dreadful start. Still have hope that we might see a draw. I think the beer is going to my head.
62:40 Portugal crowd trying to lift their team. Both sides look a little winded. I can relate. This liveblogging is draining work.
60:57 Thiago with the shot and he is denied by Ricardo. The Angola keeper is keeping his team in the game. Amazing that he doesn’t play for any club teams. My men’s team could use him.
60:22 Great shot of Ronaldo pouting on the bench. The pouting meter is off the charts.
58:34 Mantorras comes on for Akwa. Mantorras is one of the classiest players on the Angola roster. This is a great move by the Professor. Costinha in for Ronaldo for Portugal. Defensive move from Scolari. Have fun pouting on the bench Ronnie.
57:46 Ricardo with the save on the Pauleta shot. Ricardo is the new Shaka Hislop. If Trini can do it, why not Angola?
56:15 Portugal playing ping pong with one corner kick after another. Hey, Angola has gone 53 minutes without giving up a goal. I feel good about that. We just need to put one in. Come on lads.
55:03 If Angola comes back to get a point I will cut my hair in the “Loco”.
53:45 The game is starting to get bogged down in the middle third of the pitch. Portugal looks content to be up by one. Angola looks like it is having a hard time in the attack.
52:14 Portugal has controlled this game but I would hardly say they have been impressive. What is impressive is the bandage over Andre’s eye for Angola. Looks like it is holding his head together.
50:58 Angola started to put the cleats in against Portugal. When in doubt, kick them in the shins. That’s what my dad always used to say. Yellow card to Andre.
49:02 Starting to wonder why I adopted Angola for this World Cup. Is it too late to say my favorite team is Brazil?
48:29 Figuerido in Angola’s midfield is truly abysmal. He spent the first three years living in Angola before moving to Portugal. I think he is confused what country he is playing for tonight.
46:33 Do you suppose that Angola player asked his barber to give him a “Loco” haircut. Looks like it is about half done. Kids, please don’t follow Loco’s lead. Get a full haircut.
45:01 The second half is underway in Cologne. Will Angola shock the world and get a result or will this be Portugal’s night? We shall see. We’ll also see C. Ronaldo pout for another 45 min. Can you imagine the look on his face if he gives up an own goal? Would be priceless.
End of Halftime I have shed the flag cape and re-filled the beer mug. I’m good to go for another 45 minutes. Thank you all for joining me and for your comments. You are all much more amusing than I could ever dream to be. Here’s hoping for a great second half.
Halftime After a fast start from Portugal, the Palancas Negras of Angola settled things down a bit. This game is still up in the air, although Portugal looks like the far superior team. I’m going to go refill the beer mug and will be back right before the second half. What are your thoughts thus far? Does my beloved Angola have a shot of coming away with a point or is this one already over?
44:21 Ronaldo fires another shot on goal but he won’t score as long as he has that kit on. Ricardo nice save for Angola. Good save from a guy who doesn’t even play for a club team. He shares that in common with me.
42:17 Andre drills a shot on the Portugal goal and earns Angola a corner. Nothing comes out of it but Angola has shown some signs of life. As long as it is a one goal game anything could happen, right?
41:45 Both teams look a little tired now. I can relate. Drinking beer and watching football all day long is exhausting. Hey kids, after tonight’s game we are 1/8 of the way through the World Cup. Going by too fast.
40:12 It must be fun to be in the Portugal midfield right now. They are getting no pressure on the ball and you get to be near the pretty boy C. Ronaldo. His mere presence makes everyone else beautiful.
37:47 I get the sense that Angola just wants to hold off until halftime. They could have been killed early but are hanging on. Do any of you think they can even this up? I still have faith but I am an atheist.
36:21 Crisis in Berlin. I’m out of beer and thirsty as hell. Can I make it another 10 minutes? 50-50 odds right now.
35:22 Ronaldo did not miss much with that header on the corner. He isn’t going to score as long as he wears a cut off jersey. How is he allowed to get away with that. I really don’t like that guy.
34:00 Angola concedes a corner. Ronaldo heads it off the crossbar. Angola races down to the other end and gets nothing. End to end action here.
33:21 Note to anyone else who liveblogs: don’t wear a hot flag as a cape when you are typing a million words a minute. Starting to sweat more than the players. Hot day here in Berlin.
32:17 After a dreadful start Angola has turned things around a bit. Just as I type that Pauleta barely misses a header to put Portugal up by a pair. Should have burried that one.
31:07 Angola captain Akwa with a shot that misses by about a mile. The cat isn’t afraid to shoot. I hear he has been quite a hit with the German ladies. My sources say the town of Celle, Germany is smitten with him. They must fancy guys who bicycle.
29:27 No sign of Beckenbauer in the crowd yet. Maybe his helicopter ran out of gas.
28:25 How would you describe the color of Portugal’s kits? Are they maroon, burngandy or something else?
27:40 Angola’s Jamba showed the yellow card for taking down Ronaldo.
26:47 Angola starting to play better and string together passes. This might be why they qualified for the World Cup. Beat out Nigeria in qualifying. Just spotted a tattoo on the back of a Portugal player. Isn’t that a chick thing?
25:35 Akwa with his second bicycle kick of the game. Flies it high and wide but boy is he getting on the highlight shows tonight. Must have watched the movie Victory! when he was little. Pele he is.
23:19 Angola discovers that there is another half of the field. Matteus gets off a bomb from outside but it flies over the crossbar. That’s what I’m talking about Angola!
22:09 Pretty much a one sided affair so far in this one. If Angola is this weak can you imagine how a coach-less Togo will be?
21:33 Shot of Scolari on the sideline. He is happy not to be coaching England tonight. Angola’s coach is nicknamed the Professor. He needs to come up with something smart to make this game more competitive.
20:22 Simao gets mugged by Delgado in the corner. Free kick Portugal. It runs over the other touchline and Portugal contines the attack. Angola fans have to be nervous anytime the ball is in their defensive third.
18:09 The Uruguay ref has a bit of a spare tire in his backside but so far hasn’t had to do much work. Still 1-0 Portugal. The game has settled after a frentic Portugal start.
17:35 The problem for Angola is that their pants are too tight. How can they move around in those things?
17:02 This is the 8th game I have watched on German tv and I still don’t understand a friggin’ word they are saying. Something about Angola playing like arse. My translation might be off though.
15:48 Angola keeper Ricardo down on the turf being attended to by the training staff. He might be wise to get off the pitch now the way his defense is playing. He’s up and alive.
14:34 Let’s hear it for night time! No shadows in this game. Can’t Germany do something about the sun? Like hide it during televised games.
13:12 Portugal with tons of space to operate in the midfield. Pauleta has been criticized a lot in the past but that opening goal has to be a good confidence booster for him.
12:26 Portugal free kick from 40 yards out. Cleared away by Angola but controlled by Portugal. Angola looked like it was going to get crushed in this one but things have settled down a bit. Only a matter of time before Portugal scored again though.
10:23 Akwa with a huge bicycle effort but he is unable to connect. That will be on the highlight reels after the game.
9:14 Any time the ball is near the Angola fullbacks you have to be nervous. They look completely scared and outclassed. The forwards are playing ok, but the midfield is nowhere to be seen. .
8:24 Angola has gone 5 minutes without giving up another goal. Small accomplishments.
7:07 Angola corner kick smothered by Portugal’s keeper Ricardo. Why do both keepers have to been named Ricardo? That is confusing. They should have co-ordinated better.
6:16 Angola has no answer for Ronaldo and Figo in the midfield. Figueriedo tries a shot from the outside. Settle down boys. The game isn’t over.
5:04 Absolutely the worst possible start for Angola. I’m afraid this one could turn into a blowout unless the Palancas settle down. Are they even playing with a backline? Doesn’t look like it.
3:47 GOAALLLLL> Figo feeds a cross to Pauleta. Terrible defending by Angola. 1-0 Portugal.
3:15 Figo dancing around in the midfield like a dancer. He has such grace. Too bad his hair is so greasy this time around.
2:27 Angola kicks it over the Portugal endline. A minor accomplishment!
1:21 Portugal on the attack again. Figo crosses it in but it is smothered by Angola keeper Ricardo. This one could get ugly early if the Palancas aren’t better in the back.
:06 Portugal races down the field and Pauleta almost scores. That would have been the fastest World Cup goals ever. Bad sign for Angola.
Kickoff We’re underway in Cologne as Angola makes its World Cup debut against the heavily favored team from Portugal. I’m pumped. Thanks for joining me for the next 90 minutes of football fun.

Mexico Vs Iran :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 12th, 2006
Mexico wins 3-1 over Iran in the Worldcup match.
Good result for Mexico in a game that could have turned ugly for them. It looked like Iran might run away with it until Mexico took over, scored first, settled down and then came out of the half in complete control.
83:46 The celebration has started for Mexico’s fans.
81:35 Iran seems to have regained a little spunk but I don’t think Mexico is going to let them anywhere near a goal.
78:45 Antonio Naelson heads in a cross to the left corner. Playing to tie is not working out for Iran.
78:40 GOAL MEXICO!
77:00 I am learning the German words for “huge mistake” watching these replays.
75:35 An Iran defender fails to clear the ball and loses control. Bravo with the goal. Mexico 2 Iran 1.
75:29 GOAL MEXICO!
72:11 Blogger Chris says this game reminds him of the siege of Carthage, where both sides tried to wait the other out. Correct his history if you can.
70:40 The shadow is 3/4 of the way across the field and both teams look like they’ve settled into a midfield game. I guess this is what happen when two teams from the sun have to play in the shade.
65:05 1-1 still but Iran doesn’t look like the same team. I’ve seen more inspiration at a cricket match in Nebraska.
64:07 A Mexico corner after the Iran goalie apparently just didn’t feel like going to get the ball. It was right in front of him.
61:11 Iran spends 30 consecutive seconds within striking distance but resorts to launching the ball into the stands instead of kicking it anywhere near the goal.
59:35 Omar Bravo with a decent acting job gets a (suprise!) free kick!
57:41 Iran resorts to taking down Rafael Marquez as he approaches the goal. Judges are split on whether it was a flop or not.
55:30 And I mean like Long Gone.
55:29 The assertion and confidence that Iran showed for the first few minutes of the game has disappeared.
54:05 Yellowcard for Javad Nekounam. I didn’t see anything. Score still 1-1.
53:26 Corner for Mexico. Corners are the new free kicks.
51:00 Francisco Fonseca in for Borgetti. The German kommentator is throwing around words like “superstar” that I can understand.
49:00 Replay of Iran losing the ball, I guess so they don’t have to show the major soul-patch of the Mexico coach. Looks like Borgetti is about to come off.
47:00 Iran loses the ball in the far corner, Mexico fails doesn’t get much of an advantage out of it.
45:40 World Cup Blog is watching the game on a different channel now, the shadow is just as bad despite better camera angles.
45:00 Couple of half-time subs for Mexico and we’re underway.
Half Time: Iran came out looking like they were going to run all over Mexico, keeping the ball at their end of the field for most of the first 10 minutes. Mexico came to life about 18 minutes in and scored first. Iran answered with a goal in the 35th minute.
44:59 The half ends one second early and both teams are off the field. Great half. Fast and furious action with fun to watch football.
43:28 Apparently this game is being played in Nurnberg. I feel like an idiot, ignore all that Wikipedia nonsense below.
40:52 Mexico is leading Iran 13-9 in fouls. If only it could be used as a tie breaker.
38:40 31.3 m free kick for Mexico. The shadow is slowly encroaching on midfield and suddenly that’s the most exciting action on the field. Both teams hoping to head into the half with a tie.
37:44 Looks like Mexico’s trying to slow the game down, holding back in their own territory.
35:10 Yahya Golmohammadi follows a header that would have been in if not for a spectacular save. 1-1.
35:02 GOAL IRAN!
33:00 Unnecesarily long slow motion replay of goal celebration, I’m not sure why it’s up there, I missed a bunch of the game looking for a follow up to the Wikipedia mexican stand-off information.
31:00 Ball possession shown to be at exactly 50-50. Not quite a Mexican stand-off but similar. Still 1-0.
29:58 Another Beckanbauer sighting. It’s really admirable of him to make the effort to travel to every game in his personal helicopter.
27:30 A Franco header to Bravo off a(nother) set piece. Iran defenders MIA.
27:00 GOAL MEXICO! 26:20 Another Mexico free kick with a camera angle that had me convinced the ball was headed toward the goal.
24:30 A Mexico corner in a game with more free kicks than corners so far.
23:16 Important game time information: according wikipedia, a Mexican stand off is when both sides are at an impasse, a dilemna that neither side can win. Why this information is included in the liveblog: the movie Munich is referenced as an example of a Mexican stand-off and this game is being played in Munich.
21:00 Mexico seems to be getting over their jet-lag and coming back to life. With the frantic pace this game is going to see some goals VERY soon.
18:00 I knew the first flop of the game wasn’t far behind. Classic plant and dive results in a Mexico free kick.
17:50 First yellowcard of the game. Gerardo Torrado makes gets solid contact with an Iran body. Suprising that the Card Count is outpacing the Flop Count.
16:01 The speed of this game is refreshing. Bravo gets undercut and lobs his free kick to the goalie. Even he didn’t think it had a chance.
14:45 An anonymous forward hiding in the shadow takes three Iran defenders but doesn’t really get a good look at the goal.
13:00 Free kick for Mexico. Honest effort but not really close.
10:50 Two CLOSE calls for Mexico, Iran gets a cross through and then a header goes wide right. I’m sticking by my Iran 3 Mexico 0 prediction.
8:00 Reports coming in that Mexico is significantly shorter than Iran as a team, they also seem to be significantly slower.
6:50 A phantom offsides call against Iran. They look strong, moving the ball more quickly than Mexico.
5:33 Rafael Marquez with the commanding tackle in the box. He got the ball first but I still yelled at the TV for a few seconds.
2:45 Mahdavikia with a long range shot, suprisingly close off the right post.
1:25 Iran’s keeping the ball in Mexico territory, play is hugging the close sideline in the shadow. Both teams look strong.
00:00 Iran looks sharp in their all red unis with white shoes. Mexico is invisible in the shadows.

Serbia & Montenegro Vs Netherlands :Worlcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 11th, 2006

Netherlands beat the Serbia & Montenegro team 1-0. Robben scored the only match goal in the 18th minute of the first half to earn the Netherlands 3 Points.
Full-Time: Dutch win on Robben’s 18 minute strike. Good result for them, but far from a convincing display. Was it good, stifling defense by the Fearsome Foursome or a lack of ideas from the Dutch. I don’t see the Plavi doing much in this tournament if they aren’t willing to attack with any real purpose and the Dutch will have to find a way to score more than a single goal.
92:35 - Saw a close up of Gavrancic and I reckon he’s a starter for the World Cup Ugly Eleven.
91:26 - Last chance for the Dutch to break out of defense. It doesn’t happen.
89:30 - Robben earns Gavrancic a yellow card by going down like a sack of spuds at the slightest contact. Let’s hope the Dutch don’t score from this.
88:45 - Nice one-two play on the edge of the 18 yard box makes me a liar again. S&M creating a chance.
87:40 - The Dutch are hanging on but S&M not giving much cause for concern. The only thing that will beat the Dutch defense today is the Dutch defense.
85:40 - Mathijsen off for Boulahrouz who plays for Hamburger in Germany. You think he’d play for money like everyone else, but what can you say, the man likes his beef.
84:13 - Heitinga yellow carded for time-wasting. Good on the referee for catching that. I don’t think Heitinga meant it, but you gotta get the ball in play.
82:43 - Van der Sar flopping all over the place with cramps. Dutch players going handbags at dawn with the S&M player who did nothing wrong.
81:33 - van Persie stands over the free kick. Crowd expecting greatness. Nice free kick! all it needed was the slightest touch from Dutch or S&M body in the 6 yard box and it was a goal.
80:10 - Second sighting of Big Sepp in the crowd. He must be happy there’s another nation joing the FIFA family once Montenegro completes their separation from Serbia. Happy day for Sepp.
79:10 - Free kick for the Dutch goes high and wide. Much like the expectations for this Dutch team after this performance. But who wants to peak too early?
76:44 - Mood in the WCB HQ is starting to sway in S&M’s favour. We want a goal and the Dutch don’t look like they really want to score another. Then Robben pops up and makes a liar out of me. He’s on the bench for my men’s league team now.
74:30 - Some sustained Dutch pressure that goes nowhere until Robben makes a nice little run down the left gets the Dutch crowd on their feet and making some more noise. Then things settle back to the odd whislle and air horn. Where do you buy and air horn and do you ever use it anywhere else than the weekend?
70:50 - Some life from S&M. Nice low shot from someone with a name ending in ‘ic’. Van der Sar saves well but the ball pops out. No second chance and now Edwin needs a break since he’s worked so hard today. It’s hot out there in the sun.
68:44 - Ruud van Nistelrooy comes off. The wonderfully named Dirk Kuyt comes on. Doesnt he sound like a character from a Clive Cussler novel? Maybe Dirk could be played by Matthew McConnahey.
68:00 - Game being fought out in the middle of the pitch. Not much action at either end. The last pass before something exciting happens is just missing for both teams.
65:43 - Great tackling by S&M in the middle of the park earns them a free kick after the foul on Krstajic. S&M uses the break in play to sub Kezman who has worked hard for not much result. Ljuboja takes his place.
63:30 - Calls for hand-ball in the Dutch 18 yard box. Replay shows that the arm was not involved. Good call. S&M have a free kick on the edge of the area, but Stankovic stinks it up with his shot well over the bar.
62:48 - Netherlands called offside in their latest attack. They are creating but it does not seem as patient as teams of years past. They seem to be lacking the holding player who can direct play.
60:55 - van Horse-telrooy nearly scores by living in the GK’s pocket. He’s the master at popping up in the 6 yard box and nipping goals.
59:21 - van Bommel coming off to make way for Landzaat for the Dutch.
58:53 - S&M attacking around the Dutch 18 yard box but don’t seem to have any cohesive ideas. Kicks over the head rarely look good unless you’re Thierry Henry.
57:20 - Referee going through a bad spell of popularity with Dutch fans. They’re making the most noise here today. What does a ticket o the train cost from S&M to Germany?
55:40 - Gio gets a booking after a foul at midfield. Looked a little harsh for what amounted to a push in the back. S&M free kick comes to nothing.
54:10 - Wesley Snipes plays a tricky little chip into the area and Robben falls all over himself trying to connect with it. Nice variation when everyone was expecting a blast.
53:35 - Dutch free kick in the right range. Who will take it?
51:10 - Question for the minute: Does Giovanni really want to be Brazilian when he puts ‘Gio’ on the back of his Barcelona jersey? Did van Basten tell him no?
48:40 - Hard to see in the dark but a back pass to Van der Sar nearly chipped him. That would have been a much more exciting own goal than England’s. Can someone turn the lights on at the far side of the field?
47:44 - S&M attacking nicely down the left. All it takes is the right service and this game is even.
45:01 - Second half underway. You don’t get the feeling that this game will end 1-0. My hopes is that it’s S&M so that we have a game of it. Van der Sar picked up a scuffed clearance and S&M appeal for a back pass. Right decision by the referee.
Half-time: Lots of talk in the comments this game about S&M splitting up after this tournament. At my last count they have one Montenegran (Montenegrite?) on the squad. I never thought it was fair that it was two teams against one anyway. No wonder T&T did so well yesterday. Either way it looks like it might be awhile before we see Montenegro qualify for a major tournament again. Personally I’m sad cos I won’t be able to write S&M for purely innocent reasons ever again.
Half-time: Phew! What a first half. Most of the action happening in the WCB HQ with technical difficulties keeping us out of the game for 19 minutes. Missed the goal from Robben but by all accounts a cracker for the young man. Thanks for your patience and let’s hope the second half is just as lively on the pitch.
46:34 - Shot from S&M and the German commentator is roused out of his nap. Nice pace on the ball from Djordjevic but just wide. Last action of the half and it’s time to hit the fridge for more beer.
43:14 - Ognjen Koroman comes on as a substitute for Djordevic. Hard to see if that’s a tactical decision of if Djordevic is hurt.
42:35 - As the first half winds down to a close, haven’t had much reason to mention S&M. Holland dominating possession without really creating many clear-cut chances. Comfortably in control but not inspiring. Still, at least it’s not England v Paraguay, right?
38:22 - Robben is involved in everything. Unlucky to be called offside. He’s only about 24 but looks 40. London life at Chelsea must be aging him. Perhaps he can come play for my men’s league team. We have much more fun.
36:33 - Robben has a nice little run and decent shot. Van Horsetelrooy might have got a touch to direct it goalwards but just missed.
33:40 - Dutch not quite playing Total Football, but this young team has wheels. Robben looking like a Total Footballer in his all Oranje outfit.
33:25 - Two players fall over in the darkness. Your guess is as good as mine who that is.
32:40 - Van Basten using the Magic Sponge. Let’s hope it’s not a serious injury to the great player.
31: 03 - First sighting of Big Sepp at the World Cup. Nice to see him getting buddy-budy with the Kaiser. Anyone else curious just how Beckanbauer is getting to so many games so fast? My theory is cloning.
29:45 - Kezman with a diving header that just flashes wide. S&M asserting themselves more, especially from set pieces. Shadow on the field makes it tough to see the play on the far side of the field. Either that or the beer I’ve drunk is clouding my vision.
27:55 - Hearing the Dutch fans making some noise now. What a fantastic atmosphere it must be in Leipzig. S&M captain Milosevic making a nice run into the box but the header goes well high.
26:27 - Nice free kick from S&M from right in front. The replay shows the Dutch player breaking out of the wall way too early and blocking the shot.
25:03 - S&M pumping long balls into the box. The Dutch defending like you would expect the tallest people in Europe to. Weslel Snipes has a shot at the other end that goes wide.
23:25 - Not seeing much from S&M so far. Dutch still in control. Let’s hope the game stays open with the Dutch looking for more goals.
22:22 - Ruud the Horse is penalized for being a donkey in the tackle.
21:00 - Dutch looking in control. Robben the goalscorer with a scorching shot, well saved. Robben came to play today.
19:11 - Cable back in business but we missed the Dutch goal by about a minute.
18:11 – Robben dodges the Iranian full back and the goal keeper and smashes it back to the net.GOAL!!!!
1:00 - Game has kicked off. Can’t see it, but imagine the colours of the crowd are wonderful. 22 players are running around the field after a small white ball. Scintillating stuff. World Cup Blog Bob is down at the Berlin Fan Fest snapping some pix of both team supporters.
