Serbia & Montenegro Vs Netherlands :Worlcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 11th, 2006

Netherlands beat the Serbia & Montenegro team 1-0. Robben scored the only match goal in the 18th minute of the first half to earn the Netherlands 3 Points.
Full-Time: Dutch win on Robben’s 18 minute strike. Good result for them, but far from a convincing display. Was it good, stifling defense by the Fearsome Foursome or a lack of ideas from the Dutch. I don’t see the Plavi doing much in this tournament if they aren’t willing to attack with any real purpose and the Dutch will have to find a way to score more than a single goal.
92:35 - Saw a close up of Gavrancic and I reckon he’s a starter for the World Cup Ugly Eleven.
91:26 - Last chance for the Dutch to break out of defense. It doesn’t happen.
89:30 - Robben earns Gavrancic a yellow card by going down like a sack of spuds at the slightest contact. Let’s hope the Dutch don’t score from this.
88:45 - Nice one-two play on the edge of the 18 yard box makes me a liar again. S&M creating a chance.
87:40 - The Dutch are hanging on but S&M not giving much cause for concern. The only thing that will beat the Dutch defense today is the Dutch defense.
85:40 - Mathijsen off for Boulahrouz who plays for Hamburger in Germany. You think he’d play for money like everyone else, but what can you say, the man likes his beef.
84:13 - Heitinga yellow carded for time-wasting. Good on the referee for catching that. I don’t think Heitinga meant it, but you gotta get the ball in play.
82:43 - Van der Sar flopping all over the place with cramps. Dutch players going handbags at dawn with the S&M player who did nothing wrong.
81:33 - van Persie stands over the free kick. Crowd expecting greatness. Nice free kick! all it needed was the slightest touch from Dutch or S&M body in the 6 yard box and it was a goal.
80:10 - Second sighting of Big Sepp in the crowd. He must be happy there’s another nation joing the FIFA family once Montenegro completes their separation from Serbia. Happy day for Sepp.
79:10 - Free kick for the Dutch goes high and wide. Much like the expectations for this Dutch team after this performance. But who wants to peak too early?
76:44 - Mood in the WCB HQ is starting to sway in S&M’s favour. We want a goal and the Dutch don’t look like they really want to score another. Then Robben pops up and makes a liar out of me. He’s on the bench for my men’s league team now.
74:30 - Some sustained Dutch pressure that goes nowhere until Robben makes a nice little run down the left gets the Dutch crowd on their feet and making some more noise. Then things settle back to the odd whislle and air horn. Where do you buy and air horn and do you ever use it anywhere else than the weekend?
70:50 - Some life from S&M. Nice low shot from someone with a name ending in ‘ic’. Van der Sar saves well but the ball pops out. No second chance and now Edwin needs a break since he’s worked so hard today. It’s hot out there in the sun.
68:44 - Ruud van Nistelrooy comes off. The wonderfully named Dirk Kuyt comes on. Doesnt he sound like a character from a Clive Cussler novel? Maybe Dirk could be played by Matthew McConnahey.
68:00 - Game being fought out in the middle of the pitch. Not much action at either end. The last pass before something exciting happens is just missing for both teams.
65:43 - Great tackling by S&M in the middle of the park earns them a free kick after the foul on Krstajic. S&M uses the break in play to sub Kezman who has worked hard for not much result. Ljuboja takes his place.
63:30 - Calls for hand-ball in the Dutch 18 yard box. Replay shows that the arm was not involved. Good call. S&M have a free kick on the edge of the area, but Stankovic stinks it up with his shot well over the bar.
62:48 - Netherlands called offside in their latest attack. They are creating but it does not seem as patient as teams of years past. They seem to be lacking the holding player who can direct play.
60:55 - van Horse-telrooy nearly scores by living in the GK’s pocket. He’s the master at popping up in the 6 yard box and nipping goals.
59:21 - van Bommel coming off to make way for Landzaat for the Dutch.
58:53 - S&M attacking around the Dutch 18 yard box but don’t seem to have any cohesive ideas. Kicks over the head rarely look good unless you’re Thierry Henry.
57:20 - Referee going through a bad spell of popularity with Dutch fans. They’re making the most noise here today. What does a ticket o the train cost from S&M to Germany?
55:40 - Gio gets a booking after a foul at midfield. Looked a little harsh for what amounted to a push in the back. S&M free kick comes to nothing.
54:10 - Wesley Snipes plays a tricky little chip into the area and Robben falls all over himself trying to connect with it. Nice variation when everyone was expecting a blast.
53:35 - Dutch free kick in the right range. Who will take it?
51:10 - Question for the minute: Does Giovanni really want to be Brazilian when he puts ‘Gio’ on the back of his Barcelona jersey? Did van Basten tell him no?
48:40 - Hard to see in the dark but a back pass to Van der Sar nearly chipped him. That would have been a much more exciting own goal than England’s. Can someone turn the lights on at the far side of the field?
47:44 - S&M attacking nicely down the left. All it takes is the right service and this game is even.
45:01 - Second half underway. You don’t get the feeling that this game will end 1-0. My hopes is that it’s S&M so that we have a game of it. Van der Sar picked up a scuffed clearance and S&M appeal for a back pass. Right decision by the referee.
Half-time: Lots of talk in the comments this game about S&M splitting up after this tournament. At my last count they have one Montenegran (Montenegrite?) on the squad. I never thought it was fair that it was two teams against one anyway. No wonder T&T did so well yesterday. Either way it looks like it might be awhile before we see Montenegro qualify for a major tournament again. Personally I’m sad cos I won’t be able to write S&M for purely innocent reasons ever again.
Half-time: Phew! What a first half. Most of the action happening in the WCB HQ with technical difficulties keeping us out of the game for 19 minutes. Missed the goal from Robben but by all accounts a cracker for the young man. Thanks for your patience and let’s hope the second half is just as lively on the pitch.
46:34 - Shot from S&M and the German commentator is roused out of his nap. Nice pace on the ball from Djordjevic but just wide. Last action of the half and it’s time to hit the fridge for more beer.
43:14 - Ognjen Koroman comes on as a substitute for Djordevic. Hard to see if that’s a tactical decision of if Djordevic is hurt.
42:35 - As the first half winds down to a close, haven’t had much reason to mention S&M. Holland dominating possession without really creating many clear-cut chances. Comfortably in control but not inspiring. Still, at least it’s not England v Paraguay, right?
38:22 - Robben is involved in everything. Unlucky to be called offside. He’s only about 24 but looks 40. London life at Chelsea must be aging him. Perhaps he can come play for my men’s league team. We have much more fun.
36:33 - Robben has a nice little run and decent shot. Van Horsetelrooy might have got a touch to direct it goalwards but just missed.
33:40 - Dutch not quite playing Total Football, but this young team has wheels. Robben looking like a Total Footballer in his all Oranje outfit.
33:25 - Two players fall over in the darkness. Your guess is as good as mine who that is.
32:40 - Van Basten using the Magic Sponge. Let’s hope it’s not a serious injury to the great player.
31: 03 - First sighting of Big Sepp at the World Cup. Nice to see him getting buddy-budy with the Kaiser. Anyone else curious just how Beckanbauer is getting to so many games so fast? My theory is cloning.
29:45 - Kezman with a diving header that just flashes wide. S&M asserting themselves more, especially from set pieces. Shadow on the field makes it tough to see the play on the far side of the field. Either that or the beer I’ve drunk is clouding my vision.
27:55 - Hearing the Dutch fans making some noise now. What a fantastic atmosphere it must be in Leipzig. S&M captain Milosevic making a nice run into the box but the header goes well high.
26:27 - Nice free kick from S&M from right in front. The replay shows the Dutch player breaking out of the wall way too early and blocking the shot.
25:03 - S&M pumping long balls into the box. The Dutch defending like you would expect the tallest people in Europe to. Weslel Snipes has a shot at the other end that goes wide.
23:25 - Not seeing much from S&M so far. Dutch still in control. Let’s hope the game stays open with the Dutch looking for more goals.
22:22 - Ruud the Horse is penalized for being a donkey in the tackle.
21:00 - Dutch looking in control. Robben the goalscorer with a scorching shot, well saved. Robben came to play today.
19:11 - Cable back in business but we missed the Dutch goal by about a minute.
18:11 – Robben dodges the Iranian full back and the goal keeper and smashes it back to the net.GOAL!!!!
1:00 - Game has kicked off. Can’t see it, but imagine the colours of the crowd are wonderful. 22 players are running around the field after a small white ball. Scintillating stuff. World Cup Blog Bob is down at the Berlin Fan Fest snapping some pix of both team supporters.

Argentina Vs Ivory Coast :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 11th, 2006

Argentina claimed a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in a pretty entertaining game. The Argies just about deserved their win, being impressive for 60 minutes, but Ivory Coast’s first World Cup appearance was encouraging.
Read the play-by-play below, and leave your comments about the action.
Thanks to everyone who stop by and leave comments. Let’s hope the Ivory Coast can bounce back. Would be a shame if this result ruins their World Cup.
Did anyone correctly predict 2-1 to Argentina?
Great end to end stuff, and plenty of goal-mouth action. Best game of the tournament so far?
90+3 FULL TIME. 2-1 to Argentina. Great late effort by IVC, but the Argentinians definitely deserved the win.
90+2 Riquelme off, Aimar on. Just killing time. Riquelme has been outstanding.
90+ Drogba booked for throwing the ball a little too hard at Argentina’s keeper. 2-1, IVC running out of time.
90- 3 minutes of stoppage time.
87- Lots of IVC pressure. Great high cross from the left, but ref blows for foul as everyone challenges in the air.
86- IVC look lively again. Drogba’s goal was equivelant to 2 cans of Red Bull each.
84- Goal! Goal? No Goal. Rodriguez pounced on a rebound and lifted it over Tizie in the IVC goal, but he was offside. Still 2-1.
83- Argentina may come to regret taking off Crespo and Saviola.
81- Drogba missed the first cross with a header, but it was pulled back to him again and he struck it past Abbo with his left peg. Now we have a game.
81- GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Drogba, finally! 2-1.
79- Shot high and wide form B. Kone. There is no movement from the IVC forwards. I just saw Drogba standing still while his midfielders were looking for a pass. I imagine he’s exhausted.
78- Heinze with what I would term a ‘backwards tackle’ in the box. Backwards, but effective.
76- IVC sub: Aroune Kone on. IVC havbe two sets of brother on the field.
76- Drogba strikes the free kick into the wall.
75- Argentina sub: Saviola for Gonzalez
75- IVC need something soon. 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, they have a free kick.
72- Drogba close with a shot on the turn.
71- Still 2-0. IVC need to get the ball to Drogba’s feet. They can’t just keep aiming for his head while he’s got Ayala and Heinze all over him.
70- With diving so popular these days, great stuff from Drogba to get back to his feet.
69- IVC finally find Drogba in the box. Looks like he may have been pulled down but to his eternal credit Drogba got straight back up and went for goal. His shot fell to the feet of Kone, who shot wide.
67- Good strong tackle from Sorin in his own box, but then he’s hacked down in retribution.
66- IVC keep looking for Drogba with high balls into the box. I expected something more creative from them.
64- Argentina sub: Crespo out, Palacio in. He’ll play deeper than Crespo, so Argentina looking to close things down a little
61- IVC second substitution Akale out and Bakary Kone in. So a defender for an extra forward, clearly indicating their plan to step up and attack.
59- Still 2-0. Argentina playing some nice possession football. IVC must feel like they’re chasing shadows, and it’s sapping the energy they need for chasing this two goal deficit.
58- Drogba has a header at the far post, but not enough power behind it.
58- IVC looking vert shirt on ideas, Riquelme looks like a man amongst boys.
57- Crespo causing trouble in IVC box, but neither of his two crosses finds a target.
55- IVC substitution: Kalou for Didane
54- Riquelme’s cross from a free kick almost sneaks in a la Ronaldinho 2002 against England.
53- Fantastic sliding tackle to beat Crespo to the ball, and nice camera angle too.
52- Been a good game. Would be even better if IVC could get one back, as Argentina seem in control.
50- Riquelme has far too much space for my liking. Shouldn’t either Yaya Toure or Zokora go man to man with him?
49- Ivory Coast free kick bounces around like it’s in a pinball machine before Abbo gratefully picks it up.
47- Saviola does well to put a teammate through on goal from a wide angle, but whoever it was shot high and wide. (it was Maxi Rodriguez)
45- We’re underway. No substitutions from either team
2nd Half set to kick off. 2-0.
Teams are back out. Keita must be regretting that miss at 1-0.
OK, there is definitely no micro-chip in the Teamgeist ball. The powers that be felt it needed further testing before being used at a top level tournament.
Quick cuppa, then me and my friend Google will solve this micro-chip in the ball question once and for all.
Half Time- 2-0 after 45 minutes. IVC haven’t been all that bad, but Argentina have been absolutely ruthless in front of goal. Second half should be good, as IVC will have to come out and attack.
43- IVC (as I’m now calling them) with some sustained attacking. Lots of crosses, but nothing lethal.
41- Replay shows Saviola very much on-side. Other players off, but not interfering with play.
39- More basketball references. My ears hurt.
39- 2-0 to Argentina then.
37- A Riquelme pass split the IVC defence to leave Saviola one on one with the keeper, and Saviola slots home with the outside of his foot. Slight whiff of offside though?
37- GOAL! Saviola.
35- Still 1-0. I still can’t believe Keita didn’t score. He was six yards or so out with no one around.
34- Abbo makes a point blank save from Keita’s header. Keita won’t get a better chance than that.
32- Still 1-0. Kolo Toure has taken a knock but will be fine. He’s a tough guy.
31- Drogba denied inside the six yard box by a perfectly timed block from Ayala (I think).
29- Kalou shoots wide after a quick one-two. My commentator keeps making basketball analogies.
27- More pressure from Argentina. Saviola beats a man by playing the ball one side and running around his man on the other. Couple of exchanges and he got it back before dragging a shot just wide.
25- Drogba and Heinze doing some pushing and shoving. Ref lets them off with a warning.
24- 1-0 Argentina. Hands up if that’s ruined your prediction.
24- Riquelme cross from a free kick not cleared, Crespo pokes home from inside the six yard box.
23:40 - Goal!!!!!! Crespo.
23- Abbo looking solid in goal for Argentina. I was expecting much worse.
20- Riquelme finds Crespo in the box. Shot blocked. This is hotting up, but still no goals.
19- Zokora bursts into the box but cross blocked, corner
17 - Slow-mo replay suggests it wasn’t over the line? What does everyone else think???
14- Ivory Coast keeper juggles the ball from a header. Did that go over the line? I’m saying not quite but would love to see that again.
13- Was that a handball in the box? ref says corner.
12- Drogba can be seen dictating his team-mates positioning like he’s directing traffic.
11- Ivory Coast enjoying a great spell of posssession, working into the box and winning a corner.
9- Ivory Coast defence looking solid and well organized. Argentina passing around but not finding any gaps. Still 0-0
6- Akale hits it wide form distance. Worth a go with the Teamgesit ball though.
5-Sorin finds Riquelme in the box. Riquelme slowly dribbles it all the way back to where it came from. He’s looking very comforftable with the ball.
3- Great skills from Crespo on the touchline as he dribbles past two defenders before losing the ball.
2- Drogba with a header high over the bar. Half a chance, nothing more.
2- Ivory Coast looking a little nervous in possession.
1- Free kick from a dangerous(sih) position floats wide from Riquelme.
0 minutes - We have kick off!

Trinidad & Tobago Vs Sweden :Worldcup Football 2006
Posted by Khushal Khan on June 11th, 2006

Trinidad and Tobago tied Sweden 0-0 in their first World Cup match ever. Playing a man down for most of the second half, the Soca Warriors hung on to get a point. Follow all the play-by-play below and leave your comments about the match. player takes his dear time getting up. They are happy to let the clock tick. 3 minutes of official added time.
Full time Final score is 0-0. Trinidad and Tobago gets a point in their World Cup debut. Sweden will be kicking itself for not getting three points against one of the tournament’s smallest teams and playing a man up for most of the second half. If ever a team can consider a tie a win it would be T&T. Man of the match is keeper Shaka Hislop who made countless great saves.
90:00 Larsson booked for a foul from behind. Trinidad
89:00 Sweden looks to mount one last attack. There should be a bit of added time. Nerves abound on both sides. Sancho will yet another clearance.
86:47 Lots of nervous faces in the Sweden sections of the crowd. They know their team should be winning but they very well could walk away with only a point. Ibrahimovic blasts one over the crossbar. Still 0-0 and the hopes of the Caribbean rest on the final 3 minutes.
85:02 Can the minnows do it? Playing a man down for almost the entire second half, Trinidad has somehow kept Sweden off the board. 0-0. Ljunberg limping a bit for Sweden.
84:02 Sweden holds an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks and probably a 12,000 - 2 advantage in shots but the most important stat is the 0-0 score.
83:02 Sweden corner kick. How the heck is Trinidad hanging on a man down? A lot of courage from the Soca Warriors. Cleared away momentarily and Sancho clears for another Sweden corner.
81:34 Sweden with an incredible opportunity in the box but yet again they can’t finish. How many times have I typed that today? Story of the game has been Hislop in goal and Sweden’s poor finishing. Wow.
80:22 The Soca Warriors get a corner kick. Can they see a miracle happen? No, cleared away by Sweden. Still 0-0. What a great ten minutes we have left.
79:27 Shaka Hislop with another brilliant save for Trinidad. This guy is keeping his country alive. He is the hero of the match no matter what happens.
78:11 The rat tail has finally left the pitch. Let’s hope Wilhemsson does something about that thing before the next game. Obviously it is a bad luck charm. In addition to just being ridiculous.
77:15 Having no rooting interest in this game at all I can honestly say the next 13 minutes are going to be a thriller. The beauty of the World Cup. Two subs coming on for a Sweden team desperate to get three points.
75:01 Hislop warned for delaying the game. He then makes his 1,000th save of the game. Still 0-0 in this one. Trinidad playing a man down but might have a higher power on their side today.
73:45 Yellow card shown to Dwight Yorke. Sweden gets another free kick but is useless once again. Must be a very frustrating time for Sweden fans.
72:31 Just a public service reminder that we’ll be liveblogging the next game as well. Argentina vs. Ivory Coast should be a great one. The good news is that Daryl will be manning the blog so you don’t have to deal with me much longer. Thanks again for tuning into our site.
71:17 All of the action is in the Trinidad end but Sweden just can’t figure out how to put one in the goal. If the Soca Warriors come away with a point from this one they should be arrested for stealing.
68:57 Hislop is going on the currency in Trinidad. He has been the hero of the match with another strong save on yet another good Sweden scoing chance.
67:57 Do you suppose there will be a clearance sale at Ikea if Sweden loses this one? I need a desk that I can’t figure out how to put together.
66:22 Whitley on for Theobald for Trinidad. Good substitution a man down and the score tied 0-0. Fresh legs needs for the Soca Warriors to hang on.
65:27 Roland gets the runner-up award for comments: “Holy crap! If Sweden loses to a diminished Trinidad I fear for their suicide rate.”
64:07 Sancho gets knocked down to the ground. Sancho is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet. I recommend that all of you meet him soon.
63:12 For playing a man down Trinidad is not being completely dominated. Still, Sweden should be winning this one. One mistake either way could be the difference.
61:00 Still 0-0. Trinidad playing a man down. Allback on for Svensson for Sweden.
58:18 Dwight Yorke with a cracker of a shot that just goes over the ball. On the other end Ibrahimovic is stopped by a great save from Hislop. Wow, things are opening up.
57:37 Anyone know the Swedish word for “rat tail”? I believe it is “Wilhemsson”.
56:01 Why is the Sweden coach wearing a kit on the sideline? Is he going to come in the second half?
54:51 Yet another good direct chance from Sweden but all for naught. Trinidad still holds on to a 0-0 tie playing a man down. I wanted to type “Trinidad leads 0-0″ but that was the beer talking.
53:28 When I grow up I want to be Dwight Yorke. How can a guy that old party so much and still play well?
52:50 Larsson’s shot is blocked in the box. I should just copy that and paste it since it will happen a lot this game. Samuel out for T&T and Glen is in. MLS representin’
49:36 Does FIFA have an award for first red card of the tournament? Avery John needs something to make himself feel better.
48:35 So now we have close to 45 minutes of Sweden attacking and Trinidad trying to bunker in. This could turn out to be an interesting one if they can hold on for a fair amount of time.
47:15 Sweden a direct kick from just outside the box. A goal here would be devestating for Trinidad which must now play with 10 men. Ball hit into the wall and the Soca Warriors dodge a bullet for the time being.
45:24 Avery John takes out the rat tail Sweden and he is show a yellow card. His second of the match and he is sent off. WOW that chances the complexion of this game. Tough call but probably a fair one.
45:01 We’re underway again in Dortmund with Sweden and T&T squaring off after a scoreless first half. Man of the match so far has been the Trini keeper Hislop who has made a few good saves to keep his team alive.
End of Halftime They just showed a great Puma commercial with Pele. I hadn’t seen it before. Thanks to your feedback I did get another beer at half so be forewarned that if this LiveBlog dies out around the 60th minute it is because I am passed out in my chair.
Halftime Not a bad first half. Sweden had the better of the opportunities but were unable to convert. Trinidad and Tobago created some chances as well and began to gain confidence towards the end of the half. The score is 0-0. I’m going to go ice my hands and will be back right before the start of the second half. What are your thoughts on the game?
45:00 Great shot of the Trini fans in the stands. Two minutes of added time. This will be a victory for Trinidad if they go in tied.
43:45 Approaching halftime. The big question is should I have another beer and risk being incoherent the second half or should I stick to water? I’ll let you decide.
41:45 Zlatan with a shot on goal for Sweden but Hislop is up to the challenge. If you are in goal for T&T today you are going to be quite sore tomorrow. Sweden is peppering the goal with shots.
40:54 If Trinidad makes it to the half with the score o-o they will consider it a success. Sweden has to be a little frustrated that they haven’t been able to take advantage of their opportunities.
39:39 I happen to like Chris Birchall in the Soca Warriors midfield. He plays with a lot of heart. Another solid shot from Sweden and Hislop saves it. It might be only a matter of time for Sweden. Still 0-0
37:37 Sweden continues to look like they are going to nail one but don’t. Larssen with a diving header that goes over the crossbar. Will T&T be able to survive one close chance after another?
35:03 Avery John comes up lame after a hard Sweden tackle. Shots of the crowd show T&T supporters in the same section as Sweden. Hmmm, wonder if they’ll do the same thing when England play Sweden.
33:45 No, you haven’t taken bad acid. That is indeed cottonwood you see floating around the pitch. The stuff is all over the place here in Germany. Killing my sinuses. 0-0 is the score.
32:08 Looks like the T&T players prefer playing in the one strip of sun on the pitch. The ball is staying on one side of the field. Great shot from Edwards from far out but eaten up by the Sweden keeper.
30:18 I think T&T needs to consider getting new boots. Their players are having trouble staying on their feet.
28:35 Sweden has a 4-0 lead in shots. Trinidad just can’t string it together in the final third of the field. Sweden’s backline is more formidable than the Maginot Line.
27:38 Trinidad and Tobago continue to hang on. 0-0 is the score. Do you think anyone in the entire country of T&T is doing anything other than watching this game? I don’t think so.
25:06 A Larseen header for Sweden is way off the mark. They are showing Beckenbauer in the stands. How the hell did he get from Frankfurt to Dortmund in under an hour? Does he have his own helicopter?
23:43 Ljunberg is moving well for Sweden on the wing. He has had a lot of foot pain and has had to have his foot drained of blood after every match. I might have to do the same if I LiveBlog three games a day.
22:25 Every player on Sweden has a name that ends in “son”. Except for the ones that don’t. Like Ibrahimivic, who almost scores right as I type. The close chances aren’t going in for Sweden.
19:10 Birchall is playing a strong game for the Soca Warriors. Sweden earns the corner after Sancho clears it over the end line. Will the Swedes score one of their pattened set pieces? Not this time. Cleared away and we remain at 0-0.
17:20 Comment of the day from reader Ze: “Wilhemssen is like the bastard son of David Beckham and Roberto Baggio.”
15:45 I’m kind of used to these World Cup games having early goals. Sweden has had their chances but T&T has been able to hold on by a thread. For our US audience, that is clearly Hislop in goal. Please ignore your announcers. Actually through beer bottles at them if you can.
14:07 Sweden corner is cleared away. Still 0-0. Nasty tackle against the rat tailed Sweden player. Almost knocked the hair off of his head. He gets up and lives.
13:33 Sweden’s midfield is dancing around like they have no one bothering them. T&T looks like they will play behind the ball and try to spring Stern John if they can. Stern is kind of a cool name. Sure beats being called Bob.
10:30 Unlike Paraguay earlier today, the underdog Soca Warriors do not look intimidated. They are passing the ball with authority and looking for their chances. Their defense however looks like it could give up a few goals today.
9:23 Ladies and gentlemen we have our first rat tail in the tournament. Sweden’s Wilhemssen is sporting hair that should have been banned in 1986. His team looks good though.
7:37 They’re showing the other Trinidad keeper Jack on the sideline with ice on his leg. Maybe he was a late game scratch? Maybe he just likes the feel of cold ice against his skin? You decide.
6:01 Ibrahimovic called for a handball before he gets off a tough shot. Sweden looks like they want to follow England’s lead and get an early statement goal in this one.
5:09 Trinidad keeper’s name is Shaka, which for some reason makes me want to sing the song Rock the Kasbah.
4:20 Ljunberg goes down right at the edge of the box. Direct kick for the Swedes. Dangerous opportunity early on. Three men over the ball. Larssen smokes it wide of the goal. Exciting start to the game.
2:25 Dwight Yorke playing a withdrawn forward position with Stern John up top. T&T is going to try to counter attack in this one. If that isn’t the case I will pay you each a dollar.
1:08 Sweden earns a corner kick. The shot by Lucic is blocked off and we have another corner. It is misplayed by Hislop bit T&T comes away with it.
:034 Another field with shadows. Can’t FIFA do something to block out the sun for a month?
Kickoff We are underway in Dortmund with the red-clad Soca Warriors of Trinidad and Tobago squaring off against the yellow-clad Swedes. For this game I will start with a light beer that has some kind of lemon flavor to it. Very refreshing after a couple of darker Hefeweizens.
